Why three small bottles make a better gift

Perfume is one of the hardest presents to get right. It is personal, it changes as it sits on skin, and the person unwrapping it has usually spent years working out what they like. A bottle picked from a description or a counter strip is picked for the first minute, when a perfume shows only its opening. The part they would live with arrives later, once the heart and base settle.

A trio changes what the gift says. Instead of "I decided what you should smell like", it says "I noticed what you wear, and here are three ideas". They can wear one to work, one to dinner and one on a cold walk, and find the one that fits their life. If one misses, two are left. The one they fall for becomes the obvious full bottle for the next birthday, which you can then buy without guessing at all.

A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough to wear a scent for a week or so. It is filled from the original bottle, so it is the same perfume in a smaller glass. For a gift with more room, a 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays and slips into a coat pocket. How to read their taste from what they already wear

You do not need to smell anything to make a good start. You need to know what they reach for now. Check the bathroom shelf, the dressing table or the bag they carry every day, and note the name of the perfume they wear most. If you cannot look, think about how they smell when they hug you: bright and clean, soft and sweet, or deep and warm.

Then place what you find in one of four families. Each section below matches one of them.

• Fresh and bright. Citrus, green herbs, clean musk and white flowers in daylight. People who wear these often dislike anything heavy.
• Sweet and warm. Vanilla, praline, tonka bean and coffee. If their current perfume is on the sweet side, stay there.
• Fruity and woody. Fruit at the top with cedar, patchouli or moss underneath. These sit between fresh and warm and suit people who like a scent with some structure.
• Deep and after dark. Amber, resins, incense, rose and spice. For people who enjoy being noticed and rarely find a perfume too much.

Two habits make this more reliable. First, look up the notes of the perfume they already own; the notes tell you far more than the name or the bottle. Second, choose two decants from their family and one from the family next door. The two familiar picks make sure the gift lands, and the third lets them discover something new.

If they wear nothing at all, lean towards fresh and bright. It is the family least likely to overwhelm someone who is new to perfume, and it works at the office as well as at the weekend.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

A trio of decants works like a short conversation. They wear one over the holidays, another to the office in January and the third to a dinner, and by the time the small bottles run low they know which perfume is theirs. Then the full bottle stops being a guess.

1. Start with 3ml. Around 60 sprays each, enough to wear a scent for a week or so and make up their mind.
2. Move up to a 10ml decant when one stands out. Around 200 sprays, weeks of daily wear, small enough for a pocket or a handbag.
3. Keep the favourite in 30ml. Around 600 sprays and the best value per ml, and a ready answer to next year's gift question.
