What vanilla smells like in perfume

Natural vanilla comes from the cured pods of a climbing orchid, Vanilla planifolia, first grown in Mexico and now across the tropics, with Madagascar the largest producer today. The green pods smell of nothing much; the scent develops over months of curing, as the Wikipedia entry on vanillin explains. The result smells warm, sweet and slightly smoky, with a creamy, almost boozy depth that is quite different from the sugary vanilla of a dessert.

Outside its native Mexico, the orchid's flowers are pollinated by hand, as the Wikipedia article on Vanilla planifolia explains.

Real vanilla extract holds several hundred aroma compounds besides vanillin, its best-known one. Vanillin on its own can also be made in a lab, and far more of it is made that way than is taken from pods. That is why perfume vanillas range so widely: a perfumer can reach for a rich natural absolute, clean vanillin, or both. In a perfume, vanilla usually sits in the base, where it softens everything above it and gives a fragrance its warm finish.

What makes vanilla perfumes differ most is what surrounds the vanilla. Tobacco and spirits make it boozy. Resins such as benzoin and labdanum make it ambery and deep. Praline, caramel and coffee make it gourmand. Coconut makes it creamy, iris makes it powdery, and lavender makes it fresh. Tonka bean, which smells of almond, hay and vanilla at once, turns up beside vanilla in many of them.

Vanilla, tonka bean or benzoin?

Three notes on a perfume list can all read as "vanilla" on skin, and knowing them helps you shop. Vanilla itself is round, creamy and sweet. Tonka bean shares its sweetness but adds almond and fresh hay, with a slightly bitter edge that keeps a scent from turning sugary. Benzoin is a resin: warmer, drier and faintly smoky, the note that makes a vanilla feel like amber. Many perfumes use two or all three together. If you love a perfume whose list shows tonka bean but no vanilla, you probably like the drier side of the family; if benzoin or labdanum appear, you lean ambery. Our guides to tonka perfumes and amber perfumes follow those two neighbours further.

Tonka's almond-and-hay smell comes largely from coumarin, a compound first isolated from tonka beans, as the Wikipedia article on coumarin explains.

So the useful question is not "which is the best vanilla perfume?" but "which vanilla do I like?". The styles below answer that.

Boozy and smoky vanilla

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
Best overall

Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford

Top notes
Spicy Notes, Tobacco Leaf
Heart notes
Cacao, Tobacco Blossom, Tonka Bean, Vanilla
Base notes
Dried Fruits, Woody Notes
Time of day
Night out

Tobacco Vanille opens with tobacco leaf and spicy notes, then vanilla, cacao, tobacco blossom and tonka bean, over dried fruits and woody notes. Honeyed tobacco and rich vanilla, dense and warm, for winter evenings. It launched in 2007 and set the template for this style; our guide to tobacco perfumes has more in the same vein.

By Kilian Angels' Share

Angels' Share by Kilian

Top notes
Cognac
Heart notes
Cinnamon, Oak, Tonka Bean
Base notes
Candied Almond, Praline, Sandalwood, Vanilla
Time of day
Night out

Angels' Share is cognac over cinnamon, tonka bean and oak, with vanilla, praline, sandalwood and candied almond in the base. Warm cognac and spice, sweetened with praline, like the smell of a cellar in December.

XJ 1861 Naxos by Xerjoff

XJ 1861 Naxos starts with lavender, bergamot and lemon, turns to honey, cinnamon and jasmine sambac, and ends on tobacco leaf, vanilla and tonka bean. Honey and tobacco with a bright, fresh start, rich enough that a light hand is best.

Deep and ambery vanilla

Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Grand Soir is Spanish labdanum and orange, then lavender and Siam benzoin, over amber, vanilla, tonka bean, musk and cedar. Glowing resin and vanilla, like warm amber in candlelight.

Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Parfum
Best for evening

Shalimar Eau de Parfum by Guerlain

Top notes
Bergamot, Cedar, Citruses, Lemon
Heart notes
Iris, Jasmine, Patchouli, Rose
Base notes
Civet, Incense, Leather, Musk
Time of day
Night out

The vanilla in Shalimar Eau de Parfum is smoky and leathery. It shares the base with incense, leather, opoponax, sandalwood and tonka bean, sits under a heart of iris, jasmine and rose, and is lit up at the start by bergamot, lemon and mandarin. Reference works still cite Shalimar when they explain the amber family, and it remains the benchmark for ambery vanilla.

Sweet and gourmand vanilla

Lancôme La Vie Est Belle

La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme

Top notes
Black Currant, Pear
Heart notes
Iris, Jasmine, Orange Blossom
Base notes
Patchouli, Praline, Tonka Bean, Vanilla
Time of day
Night out

In La Vie Est Belle the vanilla comes with praline and tonka bean, lifted by pear and black currant at the top and softened by iris in the heart, with jasmine, orange blossom and patchouli around it. Sugared and powdery rather than boozy.

Mugler Angel
Longest lasting

Angel by Mugler

Top notes
Bergamot, Cassis, Coconut, Cotton Candy
Heart notes
Apricot, Blackberry, Caraway, Honey
Base notes
Amber, Caramel, Chocolate, Musk
Time of day
Night out

Angel is cotton candy, bergamot and fruit over honey, red berries and plum, with patchouli, chocolate, caramel and vanilla in the base. It launched in 1992, and the Wikipedia overview of perfume families gives Angel as its example of the gourmand style. It is a big scent: one spray is often enough.

Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

Black Opium pours vanilla under coffee. A base of vanilla, patchouli, cashmere wood and cedar carries a heart of coffee, bitter almond, licorice and jasmine, brightened at first by pear, pink pepper and orange blossom. Dark, sweet and a little bitter.

Good Girl by Carolina Herrera

Good Girl wraps its vanilla in cacao, praline and tonka bean, with tuberose, jasmine sambac and Bulgarian rose in the heart and almond, coffee, bergamot and lemon on top. Sweeter than Black Opium and more floral, a white-flower gourmand for evenings out. For more in this sweet style, see the best gourmand perfumes.

Creamy and tropical vanilla

Mancera Coco Vanille
Best value

Coco Vanille by Mancera

Top notes
Coconut, White Peach
Heart notes

Coco Vanille is coconut and white peach over tiare flower, ylang-ylang and jasmine, with Madagascar vanilla, white musk and woody notes in the base. Creamy, sunny and tropical, one of the few vanillas that feels right in summer.

Vanille Absolu by Montale

Vanille Absolu keeps it simple: coconut and vanilla over woody notes, with a warm touch of cinnamon in its character. Straightforward, creamy and sweet.

Hypnotic Poison by Dior

Hypnotic Poison is the almond vanilla of this group: vanilla, almond, sandalwood and musk in the base, a heart of jasmine, tuberose, rose and caraway, and coconut, plum and apricot to open. Soft, milky and warm, made for after dark.

Soft and powdery vanilla

Mon Guerlain

Mon Guerlain by Guerlain

Top notes
Bergamot, Lavender
Heart notes
Iris, Jasmine Sambac, Rose
Base notes
Australian Sandalwood, Benzoin, Coumarin, Licorice
Time of day
Daytime

Mon Guerlain is lavender and bergamot over iris, jasmine sambac and rose, with Tahitian vanilla, coumarin, Australian sandalwood, licorice and benzoin underneath. Lavender and vanilla, soft and polished, and easy enough for the office.

Guidance by Amouage

Guidance uses vanilla as an undertone rather than the headline. Hazelnut, pear and olibanum open it; osmanthus, rose, saffron and jasmine sambac follow; sandalwood, ambergris, labdanum and vanilla hold the base. Nutty and floral over a warm glow.

Delina by Parfums de Marly

Delina is litchi, rhubarb, bergamot and nutmeg over Turkish rose, peony, musk and vanilla, with cashmeran, incense, cedar and vetiver below. A rose first, softened by vanilla in the heart, the lightest touch of vanilla in this group.

Fresh vanilla

Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier

Le Male shows how fresh vanilla can be: a barbershop opening of lavender, mint, cardamom and bergamot, a spiced heart of cinnamon and orange blossom, and vanilla with tonka bean, amber and sandalwood underneath. It launched in 1995.

Valaya by Parfums de Marly

Valaya is aldehydes, white peach and bergamot over orange blossom and lily-of-the-valley, with musk, ambroxan and vanilla in the base. Here vanilla is a soft, clean glow under white flowers and musk, a spring vanilla for daytime.

The best vanilla perfume for men, and for women

Vanilla has no gender, but the partners around it often signal who a perfume was made for. On a man, vanilla tends to arrive with tobacco, lavender or spirits; in women's perfumes, with flowers, fruit or praline. Our guide to vanilla perfumes for men goes deeper on the men's side.

  • For men, or for a vanilla cologne. Start with Le Male if you want lavender on top and vanilla underneath, then Naxos for honey and tobacco. Tobacco Vanille and Angels' Share are unisex but sit comfortably on anyone who likes a rich evening scent. Our shortlist of the best perfumes for men has more warm picks.
  • For women. La Vie Est Belle and Black Opium are the sweet, modern classics; Mon Guerlain is the soft, powdery one; Coco Vanille is the summer vanilla. See the best perfumes for women for the wider shortlist.
  • For sharing. Grand Soir, Tobacco Vanille and Angels' Share are presented as unisex, and all three sit at the warm, ambery end.

How to wear vanilla

  • Mind the dose. Sweet, rich vanillas carry, so start with one or two sprays and add only if you need to.
  • Match the season. Most boozy, ambery and gourmand vanillas feel best when it is cold. For warm days, try a creamy, tropical or fresh vanilla such as Coco Vanille or Valaya.
  • Layer for a new vanilla. A simple vanilla under a citrus or a fresh floral changes its character completely. Our perfume layering guide has pairings to try.

Find your vanilla before buying a bottle

Vanilla is where people most often discover that they love one style and cannot stand another, and you only find out on your own skin, over a whole day. So try the styles before you choose.

  1. Choose your three. Boozy, gourmand and powdery make a good first set because they are the furthest apart. In 3ml, each one is around 60 sprays.
  2. Judge it in the afternoon. Vanilla changes most in the dry-down, hours after you spray, so decide on skin rather than on the first minute.
  3. Size up once you are sure. Around 200 sprays in a 10ml decant covers weeks of wear; around 600 in a 30ml decant is for the vanilla you reach for every week, at the lowest price per ml.

Every vanilla perfume we carry is on our vanilla note page, and our winter perfumes page gathers the warmest ones. If you are new to buying perfume online, our guide on choosing perfume without smelling it explains how to read the notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best vanilla perfume?
It depends on the kind of vanilla you like. Boozy vanillas such as Tobacco Vanille and Angels' Share are rich and warm, ambery ones such as Shalimar and Grand Soir are deep and resinous, gourmand ones such as La Vie Est Belle are sweet, and fresh ones such as Le Male pair vanilla with lavender. Find your style first, then the perfume.
What does vanilla smell like in perfume?
Warm, sweet and creamy, with a slightly smoky, almost boozy depth that is richer than the vanilla of a dessert. In perfume it usually sits in the base, where it softens the notes above it and gives the fragrance a warm finish.
Are vanilla perfumes only for winter?
No. Boozy, ambery and gourmand vanillas feel most at home in cold weather, but creamy and fresh styles work in warm months too. Coco Vanille, with coconut and white peach, is a summer vanilla, and Valaya wraps vanilla in white flowers and musk for spring.
What is the best vanilla perfume for women?
It depends on the vanilla you like. La Vie Est Belle and Black Opium are sweet and modern, Mon Guerlain is soft and powdery with lavender, Shalimar Eau de Parfum is smoky and ambery, and Coco Vanille is creamy and tropical for summer.
What is the best vanilla perfume for men?
Start with Le Male for lavender over vanilla, or XJ 1861 Naxos for honey and tobacco. Tobacco Vanille and Angels' Share are unisex and suit anyone who likes a rich evening scent. A 10ml decant of Le Male is €20.79.
How can I find the right vanilla perfume without buying a full bottle?
Try the styles side by side from small decants filled from the original bottle. A 3ml holds around 60 sprays, enough for a week or so of real wear; a 10ml decant holds around 200; and a 30ml decant around 600, for the vanilla you already know you love.
Which perfumes have vanilla as a base note?
Most of the seventeen in this guide list vanilla in the base, where it lasts longest: Grand Soir, Shalimar, XJ 1861 Naxos, Angels' Share, La Vie Est Belle, Black Opium, Hypnotic Poison and Le Male among them. Coco Vanille and Mon Guerlain name their vanilla, Madagascar and Tahitian. Tobacco Vanille and Delina carry their vanilla in the heart, and Vanille Absolu at the top.
What is the best unisex vanilla perfume?
Tobacco Vanille, Angels' Share and Grand Soir are the three vanillas in this guide presented as unisex: the first two boozy and smoky, Grand Soir deep and ambery. All three are warm and rich, so they suit anyone who likes a full scent.
Do men like the smell of vanilla on a woman?
Many do; vanilla is warm and approachable. Scent is personal, so a creamy or powdery vanilla is the safe place to begin.
What goes well with vanilla in perfume?
Tobacco and spirits make it boozy, lavender makes it fresh, iris makes it powdery, coconut makes it creamy, and tonka bean sits beside it in many.
