How to choose a Diptyque without smelling it

Diptyque is easy to buy on name alone and hard to buy well that way. The names are short and poetic, and they tell you almost nothing about what is in the bottle. A perfume called after a place can be a heady flower. A perfume called after a material can be mostly musk. So the name is the last thing to read, not the first.

Read the notes instead, and read them in order. The top notes are what you smell in the first minutes. The heart is what a scent is for most of the day. The base is what is left on a scarf the next morning. Two perfumes that share a top note can end up in very different places, and the base is usually the better guide to whether you will like something by the afternoon.

Then look at the style. Every perfume below is listed as unisex, so the useful split is not men's or women's but the mood you want. Green and bright scents suit warm days and close quarters. Florals range from sheer to loud. Powdery and musky scents sit close and read as clean skin. Woody and warm scents are the ones people choose for colder months and evenings.

Finally, treat community votes as a hint, not a promise. The votes below come from people who wear these perfumes and say how long they last and how far they carry. Your skin, your climate and the number of sprays you use will change all of that. Wearing a scent is the only reliable test.

Green and bright

These two are the easiest place to start if you like scents that feel fresh without smelling like a shower gel. One is green and milky, the other is bitter and sunny.

Philosykos by Diptyque

Philosykos is a portrait of a fig tree rather than a fig on a plate. It opens on fig and fig leaf, green and slightly sharp. The heart adds green notes, fig tree sap and a touch of coconut, which gives the whole thing a soft, milky edge. It settles on cedar and fig tree wood, dry and quiet, so the sweetness never takes over.

Olivia Giacobetti composed it, and it launched in 1996, which makes it the oldest perfume in this list. On longevity, the community vote leans moderate, with long lasting close behind. Its sillage gets a clear moderate from most community voters. Summer and spring days are when people tend to reach for it. If you want one Diptyque that shows what the house does with a single idea, this is a good first test.

Eau des Sens by Diptyque

Eau des Sens is the brightest perfume here. Its listed notes are bitter orange, orange blossom and juniper, and that trio tells you the story: a sharp, zesty opening, a flowery lift, and a resinous, gin-like green edge that keeps it from turning sweet. It reads as citrus and aromatic more than floral.

It launched in 2016. Most community voters call its longevity moderate. Its sillage, too, lands on moderate for most voters, and the season votes favour summer and spring days. It is the one to try if you like orange scents but find most of them too short-lived and too simple, because the juniper gives it more shape.

Two very different flowers. One is a tuberose in the open air, the other a rose with fruit around it. Both are by Fabrice Pellegrin.

Do Son by Diptyque

Do Son is tuberose kept light and breezy. It starts with orange leaves and pink pepper, green and a little spicy, so the flower arrives through a fresh opening rather than all at once. The heart is tuberose with Turkish rose, creamy and full. The base of musk and iris adds a powdery finish that softens the tuberose as it dries.

It launched in 2005. Most community voters call its longevity long lasting. Most community voters also rate its sillage strong, so a light hand works well here. The season votes favour summer and spring, by day and after dark alike. If you have always found tuberose too heavy, this is a gentler way to find out whether you like it.

Eau Rose by Diptyque

Eau Rose is rose made juicy. The opening is lychee, bergamot and blackcurrant, fruity and bright. The heart holds two roses, damask and centifolia, with geranium adding a green, slightly minty edge. It dries down to cedar, musk and white honey, soft and a little sweet.

It launched in 2012. For most community voters, both its longevity and its sillage come out moderate. The warm months, summer and spring, are its season in the votes, mostly by day. Soft, powdery and musky

These three sit closer to the skin and feel clean, soft or powdery. They are the quietest group in the house, though one of them carries further than the others.

Fleur de Peau by Diptyque

Fleur de Peau is a musk scent with a floral heart. It opens with aldehydes, pink pepper, bergamot and angelica, sparkling and a little peppery. The heart is iris and Turkish rose, powdery and soft. The base carries most of its character: musk, ambrette, ambergris and sandalwood, warm and skin-like.

It launched in 2018. Its longevity reads as moderate to most community voters, and so does its sillage. The season votes spread across spring, summer, autumn and winter, mostly for daytime. That makes it the most all-round perfume here, the one to try if you want something you could wear to work in any month.

L'Eau Papier by Diptyque

L'Eau Papier is the newest of the nine and the most unusual. It opens with mimosa, soft and yellow. The heart is rice and sesame, which gives it a nutty, faintly sweet, grain-like warmth. White musk, musk and woody notes form the base, and it dries to something pale and airy.

Fabrice Pellegrin composed it, and it launched in 2023. On longevity, the community vote leans moderate, ahead of long lasting. The sillage vote also leans moderate, with intimate next. Spring and summer lead its season votes, and the office shows up among its daytime picks. It is a good choice if most perfumes feel too loud for you, and one where wearing it for a few days matters more than usual, because its effect is subtle.

Orphéon by Diptyque

Orphéon is powdery but not shy. Juniper berry opens it, crisp and slightly resinous. Jasmine forms the heart. The base is cedar, tonka bean and talc, which together give a dry, powdery warmth.

Olivier Pescheux composed it, and it launched in 2021. Most community voters call its longevity long lasting. For sillage, the vote leans strong, ahead of moderate. Autumn and winter nights are when the community reaches for it. It is the powdery Diptyque for colder evenings, and it pairs naturally with the warmer group below.

Woody and warm

The two richest perfumes in the house as we carry it. One is creamy wood, the other spiced vanilla.

Tam Dao by Diptyque

Tam Dao is a sandalwood perfume at heart. It opens with lime, coriander and ginger, a bright, slightly spicy start that fades quickly. Then sandalwood and cedar take over, smooth and creamy. The base of musk, vanilla and amber keeps it warm and round rather than dry.

Daniel Moliere composed it, and it launched in 2003. Most community voters call its longevity long lasting, while its sillage lands on moderate. Autumn and winter lead its season votes, both by day and at night. If you like the idea of a wood scent but find cedar-heavy perfumes too sharp, this is the softer route in.

Eau Duelle by Diptyque

Eau Duelle is vanilla with spice and tea. The top notes are bergamot, pink pepper, elemi and saffron, warm and a little resinous. The heart adds juniper, cardamom and black tea, which keep the sweetness in check. The base is Bourbon vanilla, musk, ambergris and cypriol, deep and smoky.

Fabrice Pellegrin composed it, and it launched in 2010. Its longevity is long lasting to most community voters. The sillage vote leans strong, with moderate next. A first three, one from each side of the house

If you want to understand Diptyque rather than buy a single perfume, start with three that have almost nothing in common.

Philosykos is the green one: fig, fig leaf and cedar, fresh and milky, for warm days. Do Son is the floral one: tuberose and Turkish rose over musk, bright and generous. Tam Dao is the warm one: sandalwood and cedar over vanilla and amber, for colder months.

Wear each for a few days on its own. One of them will feel right almost at once, one will surprise you, and one you will not reach for again. That tells you which part of the house to explore next. If the fig wins, try Eau des Sens. If the tuberose wins, try Eau Rose or Fleur de Peau. If the sandalwood wins, try Eau Duelle or Orphéon.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

A Diptyque full bottle is a considered purchase, and reading notes only gets you so far. The only way to know whether a perfume works on your skin is to wear it for real: in the morning, at your desk, and at the end of the day. That is the gap a small bottle fills.

1. Start with three 3ml decants. Each 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, so you get about a week of wear from each one. Philosykos, Do Son and Tam Dao make a good first set.
2. Wear each one alone for a few days. Judge it in the afternoon, not in the first minute, when the top notes have gone and the heart has settled.
3. Move up to a 10ml decant for the one you reach for. Around 200 sprays sit in a 10ml decant. That covers weeks of daily wear, and it fits a pocket.
4. Then decide on the bottle. By then you know whether you love it, or whether the next perfume in its group suits you better.
