Diptyque Orphéon sample: a 3ml wear test and 5 Diptyques to try next

A Diptyque Orphéon sample in 3ml gives you around 60 sprays to judge juniper, jasmine, cedar, tonka and talc on skin. Follow a five-day test, then choose from five more Diptyques.

In this guide

A Diptyque Orphéon sample lets you wear the 2021 Eau de Parfum on your own skin before deciding on a full bottle. 10ML fills Orphéon from the original bottle; the 3ml decant is €13.23 and the 10ml decant is €37.26. This guide explains its juniper berry, jasmine, cedar, tonka bean and talc notes, reads the community votes, and sets out a five-day wear test followed by five next samples, including Tam Dao and Fleur de Peau.

A 10ML 3ml decant of Diptyque Orpheon beside juniper berries, white jasmine and tonka beans, notes of the scent

Diptyque now sells Orphéon in two concentrations, as its Orphéon collection page shows: the Eau de Parfum and a newer Eau de Toilette. The sample in this guide is the 2021 Eau de Parfum, credited to Olivier Pescheux, not the toilette.

What Diptyque Orphéon smells like

Orphéon is a unisex Eau de Parfum with a short note list. Juniper berry is the sole top note, giving the opening a fresh, aromatic edge. Jasmine forms the heart, so the perfume moves from that brisk start towards a softer floral centre rather than staying a simple fresh scent.

Cedar, tonka bean and talc make up the base. Cedar brings the woody side, tonka adds warmth, and talc accounts for the powdery finish. The catalogue's four accords are powdery, woody, fresh and floral, which is a useful summary of the whole progression: aromatic juniper first, jasmine next, then powdery woods with a warmer tonka facet.

That is why a first sniff tells you little. The fresh opening and floral heart give way to a base where cedar, tonka and talc share the stage. Follow the individual threads on our jasmine note page, cedar note page and tonka bean note page, or see the broader powdery perfume guide if that final facet is the one you enjoy most.

Diptyque's own description adds atmosphere rather than extra notes. On its Orphéon Eau de Parfum page, the house presents the perfume as a portrait of a Saint-Germain bar, evoking smoke, powder and burnished wood. Read beside the note list, that description points back to the fresh juniper, floral heart and powdery woody base rather than promising a separate smoky note.

What the community votes say

On longevity, most community voters choose long lasting for this Eau de Parfum. Sillage votes lean strong, then moderate. Voters most often choose autumn and winter as its seasons. Night wear leads the time-of-day choices.

These are community patterns, not a performance promise for your skin. They suggest that other wearers place this Eau de Parfum in cooler seasons and evening settings, but they do not settle whether its powdery woody base will suit you. The votes also make a useful testing plan: include an evening and pay attention to the scent you notice around yourself after the opening has passed.

The key distinction is between what voters report and what you enjoy. You may agree with the season and night votes yet prefer a softer presence, or enjoy the same juniper and jasmine progression during an ordinary day. A decant lets you record your own answer instead of treating a vote as a rule.

A five-day wear test with a 3ml Orphéon sample

A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough for repeated wears without making the first spray carry the whole decision. Orphéon should be judged after an hour on skin, when the juniper opening has had time to meet the jasmine heart and move towards the cedar, tonka bean and talc base. Do not judge it on paper, and do not let the first minutes decide for you: wearers often describe a big change between the first spray, which some find soapy, and the powdery woods an hour later.

  1. Day one: learn the full progression on skin. Apply Orphéon to clean skin and leave the opening unjudged. Make your first proper assessment after an hour, noting how much juniper and jasmine you still notice. Return later to record the cedar, tonka and talc base in plain words, such as woody, warm or powdery.
  2. Day two: repeat the same application. Wear it on the same area of skin at roughly the same time. At the same settled stage, ask whether the floral heart feels clear and balanced or whether the powdery side is becoming more prominent than you would like. Compare that answer with day one rather than relying on memory alone.
  3. Day three: wear it at night. Night is the leading occasion in the community votes, so give it one evening in a setting where you would genuinely choose a perfume. Once it has settled on skin, decide whether the woody base feels comfortable for the whole occasion and whether you enjoy catching it yourself.
  4. Day four: try a cooler-season setting. Autumn and winter lead the season votes. On a day that fits your own routine, notice whether the fresh juniper start, jasmine heart and warmer tonka base feel coherent together. Keep the application consistent so the setting, not a different amount of perfume, is the main change.
  5. Day five: return to your favourite setting. Read the previous entries before applying it again. At that same checkpoint, write down which part you most want to keep: the aromatic opening, the jasmine centre or the powdery woods. Your final note should answer whether you would reach for Orphéon again, not simply whether the first spray was pleasant.

Keep those notes when choosing your next decant. "Liked the cedar but wanted less talc" points somewhere different from "loved the jasmine and wanted more warmth", and both are more useful than a yes or no.

From a 3ml discovery to a 10ml decant

The five-day plan gives a 3ml decant a clear job: reveal how the perfume develops on your skin across more than one setting. Around 60 sprays leaves room to repeat the test, wait an hour before judging and compare your written impressions. It is enough to discover whether the progression from juniper and jasmine to the powdery woody base is one you want to keep wearing.

A 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays and is the practical next step when the perfume has earned regular wear. It lets you keep the perfume in rotation for weeks rather than reserving every application for a test. Our perfume samples page sets out the sizes, what a perfume decant is explains the format, and how long a 10ml perfume lasts looks at that size in more detail.

Five Diptyque perfumes to sample after Orphéon

Choose by the facet you liked most. Tam Dao takes the woods in a sandalwood-led direction, Fleur de Peau and L'Eau Papier explore musk and powder, Eau Duelle adds vanilla and spice, and Philosykos turns towards green fig. For a wider house view, read our guide to the best Diptyque perfumes; for a comparison with another house, see Le Labo vs Diptyque.

Tam Dao by Diptyque

Tam Dao is the next sample when cedar appealed to you but you want a different wood at the centre. This 2003 unisex perfume, credited to Daniel Moliere, opens with lime, coriander and ginger. Sandalwood and cedar form the heart, while musk, vanilla and amber make up the base. Its woody, creamy, spicy and warm accords make it sandalwood-led rather than a repeat of Orphéon's juniper, jasmine, tonka and talc structure. Most voters rate its longevity long lasting. Most rate its sillage moderate. Autumn and winter receive the most season votes. Day and night lead the time-of-day choices.

Fleur de Peau by Diptyque

Fleur de Peau follows the powdery thread through a muskier composition. Olivier Pescheux is credited with this 2018 unisex Eau de Parfum. Aldehydes, pink pepper, bergamot and angelica open it, iris and Turkish rose form the heart, and musk, ambrette, ambergris and sandalwood sit in the base. The listed accords are musky, powdery, floral and clean, so it suits anyone who preferred the soft powdery finish to the juniper opening. Longevity is rated moderate by most community voters. Most also rate its sillage moderate. Its season votes span spring, autumn, summer and winter. Day wear leads the time-of-day vote.

L'Eau Papier by Diptyque

L'Eau Papier is a 2023 unisex Eau de Toilette credited to Fabrice Pellegrin. It begins with mimosa, moves to rice and sesame in the heart, then rests on white musk, musk and woody notes. That makes it a useful next sample when you want powder and musk with a nutty, aromatic facet instead of Orphéon's fresh floral structure. Its accords run from musky, white floral and powdery to woody, aromatic, nutty and sweet. Longevity votes lean moderate, with long lasting next. Sillage votes lean moderate, then intimate. Spring and summer lead the season choices. Day and office wear lead the time-of-day votes.

Eau Duelle by Diptyque

Eau Duelle keeps juniper in its heart but takes it in a warmer, spicier direction. This 2010 unisex Eau de Toilette is also credited to Fabrice Pellegrin. Bergamot, pink pepper, elemi and saffron open the perfume; juniper, cardamom and black tea form the heart; Bourbon vanilla, musk, ambergris and cypriol make the base. Vanilla, spicy, woody and warm are its listed accords, so choose it when Orphéon's warmer base was the part that caught your attention. For longevity, most community voters choose long lasting. The sillage vote leans strong, with moderate behind it. Winter and autumn lead the season votes. Night wear leads the time-of-day choices.

Philosykos by Diptyque

Philosykos shares cedar with the main perfume but places it under fig tree wood rather than a warmer, powdery base. Olivia Giacobetti is credited with this 1996 unisex Eau de Toilette. Fig and fig leaf open it, green notes, coconut and fig tree sap form the heart, and cedar joins fig tree wood in the base. Green, woody, fresh and milky accords make it the clearest change of direction for someone who enjoyed Orphéon's freshness more than its powder. Longevity votes lean moderate, with long lasting following. Most voters rate its sillage moderate. Summer and spring lead the season choices. Day wear leads the time-of-day vote.

Does Orphéon smell like Tam Dao?
