What makes a perfume last

A perfume fades in layers. The light top notes, citrus and fruit above all, lift off first. The heart follows. What stays on your skin late in the day is the base, and the base is where staying power lives.

Heavy, slow materials do most of that work. Amber, vanilla, patchouli and sandalwood turn up again and again in perfumes that people describe as long lasting, along with musk, resins and leather. A scent built mostly on citrus and green notes can be lovely, but it rarely makes it to the evening.

Two more things matter, and neither is printed on the box. Concentration is the first: an eau de parfum or a parfum usually carries more perfume oil than an eau de toilette of the same name. Your skin and the weather are the second. Dry skin and heat tend to shorten a scent; moisturised skin and cool air tend to hold it. That is why the same perfume can feel endless on a friend and polite on you.

There is also a trick of the nose. After an hour or so you stop noticing your own perfume, even while the people around you still can. Many scents that seem to vanish are simply ones your nose has tuned out.

How to read the votes

Every perfume on this list comes with a community vote on longevity (how long it stays) and on sillage (how far it travels from you). Wearers choose a category: for longevity, moderate, long lasting or eternal; for sillage, intimate, moderate, strong or enormous.

Where we write that votes "lean" a certain way, that category is ahead but not by a wide margin. Where we write "most voters", a clear majority chose it. We never turn a vote into hours, because a vote describes other people's skin, not yours.

Guidance by Amouage

Guidance launched in 2023. It opens with pear and hazelnut, cut through with olibanum. The heart is floral and golden, with osmanthus, rose, jasmine sambac and a thread of saffron. Underneath sit sandalwood, akigalawood, labdanum, ambergris and vanilla, so the dry-down turns creamy, woody and resinous. Shalimar Eau de Parfum by Guerlain

Shalimar Eau de Parfum, from 1990, starts surprisingly bright. Bergamot, lemon and mandarin orange flash over a little cedar. The long finish is where it earns its place here: incense, leather, opoponax, civet and sandalwood around vanilla, tonka bean and musk. Smoky, powdery and a touch animalic. Alien by Mugler

Alien, launched in 2005, has a very short note list: jasmine sambac, then cashmeran, then amber. Out of those three comes a big, glowing white floral with a soft, woody warmth underneath. Sweet perfumes tend to cling, because the materials that make them edible are often the same heavy ones that make them stay.

La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme

La Vie Est Belle, from 2012, begins with juicy pear and black currant. Iris gives the heart a powdery softness, with jasmine and orange blossom beside it. Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

Black Opium launched in 2014. Pear, pink pepper and orange blossom lead into a heart of coffee, bitter almond, licorice and jasmine. Vanilla, patchouli, cedar and cashmere wood make up the base, so it wears dark, sweet and slightly bitter. Community votes on its longevity lean moderate, then long lasting. Lost Cherry by Tom Ford

Lost Cherry, from 2018, is black cherry, cherry liqueur and bitter almond at the start. Sour cherry and plum join jasmine sambac and Turkish rose in the heart. Wear it before you buy the bottle

A vote tells you how a perfume behaved for many strangers. It cannot tell you how it will behave on you, in your climate, under your coat. The only reliable test is to wear the scent on ordinary days and pay attention. A week is enough to learn a lot.

1. Spray once in the morning, on the skin of your wrist or neck rather than on clothes, and note the time.
2. Smell the spot directly at midday and again in the evening. Note what has changed and how much is left.
3. Ask someone close whether they can still smell it. Your own nose stops noticing sooner than theirs.
4. Repeat on a warm day and on a cool one, because heat and cold change staying power more than most people expect.
5. If you are torn between two scents, wear one on each wrist on the same morning and compare them at night.

This is where small sizes earn their keep. The smallest, a 3ml decant, carries around 60 sprays: roughly a week of real wear. A 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays, weeks of daily wear, which lets you repeat the test in different weather and settle the question properly.
