How to choose a Louis Vuitton perfume without smelling it

Most people meet a Louis Vuitton perfume on a paper strip in passing, or not at all. When you are choosing from a screen, the list of notes is your map, and it is worth reading it as a timeline. Top notes are the opening, bright and brief. The heart is the character a perfume settles into after a while. The base is the part that stays with you through the day, and it usually decides whether a scent becomes a favourite or a disappointment.

Imagination opens on citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange, sharp and sunny. The heart turns warmer with Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger and Ceylon cinnamon, a spiced, slightly sweet middle. The dry-down is where it becomes its own thing: Chinese black tea, ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum, dry, smoky and a little mineral.

A 2021 launch, it is the one perfume here listed for men. Long lasting is where most community voters put its longevity. For sillage, the clear community vote is moderate. Spring, autumn and winter are the seasons it gets chosen for, across day, office and evening, which makes it one of the easiest perfumes in the house to wear every day.

Météore by Louis Vuitton

Météore is citrus with a hot edge. Sicilian mandarin, orange and Calabrian bergamot arrive together with three peppers: Sichuan, pink and black. Guatemala cardamom, Indonesian nutmeg and Tunisian neroli form the heart, aromatic and clean. Java vetiver in the base leaves it dry, green and woody.

It came out in 2020. Moderate is the longevity verdict from most community voters. Its sillage also gets a moderate verdict from most community voters. Warm months are when people reach for it, summer first and then spring, at the office or during the day. If Imagination feels too warm for July, this is the lighter choice.

Citrus and sea

L'Immensité by Louis Vuitton

L'Immensité starts with grapefruit, ginger and bergamot, bitter and zesty. The heart brings water notes with sage, rosemary and geranium, so it reads as herbs on a wet stone rather than a sugary splash. Ambroxan, amber and labdanum in the base give it a warm, salty glow once the citrus has faded.

It was released in 2018. Community votes on its longevity lean towards moderate, with long lasting next. Sillage draws a clear moderate from most community voters. It is chosen for summer and spring, as a daytime and office scent.

Afternoon Swim by Louis Vuitton

Afternoon Swim is the most straightforward citrus in the house. Mandarin orange, Sicilian orange and bergamot open juicy and bright, aquatic notes cool the heart, and ambergris with ginger settle underneath, soft and a little spicy.

It arrived in 2019. The longevity verdict from most community voters is moderate. On sillage, most community voters land on moderate as well. Summer days are its whole season in the votes.

On The Beach by Louis Vuitton

On The Beach opens with yuzu and neroli, then turns herbal and warm: sand, rosemary, pink pepper, thyme and cloves in the heart. Cypress in the base keeps it green and woody. It feels less like a swim and more like herbs growing wild in the dunes.

It launched in 2021. When it comes to longevity, most community voters pick moderate. The sillage vote goes to intimate for most community voters, so expect it to stay close to the skin. People choose it for summer, and for the daytime.

Sunlit, fruity and soft

These two keep the bright start of the citrus group but add fruit, flowers and musk, which makes them softer and more relaxed.

Pacific Chill by Louis Vuitton

Pacific Chill has a long, busy top: citron, orange, mint, lemon, black currant and coriander, cool and sparkling. Apricot, basil, carrot seeds and rose make the heart green and fruity at once. The base of fig, dates and ambrette is soft and gently sweet.

It is the most recent perfume in this guide, launched in 2023. For longevity, most community voters answer moderate. Most community voters describe its sillage as moderate too. Voters see it as a summer daytime scent, and work is the occasion it most often gets picked for.

California Dream by Louis Vuitton

California Dream opens with mandarin orange and pear, juicy and light. A heart of florals keeps it pretty rather than sharp, and ambrette, musk and benzoin in the base give it a warm, skin-soft finish.

It launched in 2020. Community votes on its longevity lean moderate, followed by weak, so a small size is the honest way to see how it wears on you. Its sillage is judged moderate by most community voters. Voters choose it for summer days and for work.

Rose, two ways

Rose runs through the house in two very different moods: sweet and powdery for daytime, or dark and spiced for the evening.

Attrape-Rêves by Louis Vuitton

Attrape-Rêves opens with bergamot, ginger and lychee, juicy and slightly spicy. The heart is peony and Turkish rose with cocoa, which gives the flowers a soft, dusky sweetness. Patchouli in the base grounds it with an earthy finish.

It dates from 2020. Longevity comes out as moderate for most community voters. Sillage, likewise, is moderate to most community voters. Spring and autumn are its seasons, day and evening its times, so it bridges the fresh and the dark sides of the house.

Les Sables Roses by Louis Vuitton

Les Sables Roses is a rose for the night. Saffron and black pepper open it hot and dry. Bulgarian rose and rose centifolia fill the heart, rich and velvety. Ambergris and agarwood (oud) in the base make it deep, woody and a little animalic.

Most community voters give it a long lasting verdict on longevity. On sillage, strong is what most community voters choose, so a single spray is a good place to start. Winter and autumn evenings and nights are when people reach for it.

Dark, smoky and resinous

This is the other half of the house: dense perfumes built on oud, incense and leather. They are the ones most people hesitate over at full-bottle size, and the ones that most reward a trial on skin first.

Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton

Ombre Nomade starts with oud and raspberry, smoky wood with a flash of berry. The heart adds rose, saffron and geranium, spiced and floral. Frankincense and benzoin in the base make the dry-down resinous, smoky and faintly sweet.

It was released in 2018. On longevity, most community voters go as far as eternal, the top of the scale. Most community voters call its sillage strong. It is a winter perfume in the votes, for nights and evenings, and going out is the occasion it is picked for.

Nouveau Monde by Louis Vuitton

Nouveau Monde is the richest perfume here. Oud, saffron and blackcurrant open it, then leather, cocoa, rose and incense form a dark, spiced heart. The base is long and warm: patchouli, vanilla, caramel, amberwood and tonka bean, so it ends closer to a dessert than a campfire.

It shares 2018 as its launch year with Ombre Nomade. Longevity is long lasting in the eyes of most community voters. Community votes on its sillage lean moderate, with strong in second place. Nuit de Feu by Louis Vuitton

If you want to understand the house rather than pick one perfume blind, start with three that sit far apart.

Afternoon Swim is the light one: orange peel and sea air, simple and bright, for warm days. Imagination is the middle ground: citrus and ginger over black tea and smoky woods, for almost any day of the year. Ombre Nomade is the dark one: oud, raspberry and rose over frankincense, for winter evenings.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

A Louis Vuitton full bottle is a serious purchase, and the house offers no smaller way in. Notes on a page tell you which direction a perfume goes, but only your own skin can tell you whether you want to smell of it every day. That is the gap a small size fills.

1. Start with a 3ml decant of each of your first three. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough to wear a perfume properly for several days: at work, in the evening and at the weekend.
2. Judge each one after lunch, not at the counter. The opening minutes are all top notes. What counts is the heart and the base, once the citrus has gone.
3. Move up to a 10ml decant for the one you keep reaching for. With around 200 sprays inside, a 10ml decant covers several weeks of everyday use and slips into a pocket or washbag.
4. Only then choose a full bottle. A few weeks in, you will know if this is the one, or if a neighbour from the same group would suit you better.
