What does Black Orchid smell like?
Black Orchid is Tom Ford's 2006 unisex perfume, and it is dark from the first spray. Black truffle opens it, with ylang-ylang, gardenia, jasmine and black currant around it and a quick flash of bergamot, mandarin orange and Amalfi lemon. The heart is an imagined orchid, with lotus, spices and fruity notes. The base carries most of its reputation: Mexican chocolate, patchouli, incense and vanilla, set on amber, sandalwood, vetiver and white musk. Its accords read warm spicy, earthy, woody and sweet, with a powdery, balsamic edge. It is the earthy truffle-and-patchouli thread, more than the florals, that makes it Black Orchid.
Two perfumes from the same house help place it. Black Orchid Reserve, from 2025, keeps the truffle and bergamot at the top and moves the base towards dark chocolate, patchouli, tonka and vanilla, so it reads richer and more gourmand. Velvet Orchid, from 2014, is a separate perfume rather than a version: honey, rum and citrus over orchid and suede, then vanilla, sandalwood and musk. It keeps the orchid and drops the earth.
That split matters when you judge the clones below. Most of them catch the chocolate and patchouli. Fewer keep the truffle, and fewer still keep the shadowy floral middle that stops Black Orchid from turning into a dessert.

Black Orchid as a 10ml decant, or a clone bottle?
Black Orchid is €30.51 at 10ML as a 10ml decant, poured from the original bottle. Around 200 sprays is some nine weeks of daily wear at three sprays. Yet that decant costs more than either of the two lowest-priced clone bottles in the table, each a full 100ml, so on price per ml the clones win, and nobody should pretend otherwise.
What the decant buys is the part they trim: the truffle, the dark floral middle and the dry, earthy close. If Black Orchid is an evening perfume for you, worn a couple of times a week, a 10ml decant lasts a long time. Reaching for a dark gourmand daily? Then buy a clone bottle, and keep a 3ml of the original as the yardstick you hold it against. Black Orchid Reserve comes in the same sizes, from €16.11.
What every clone gets wrong
Read the note lists together and a pattern shows. The clones agree on chocolate, patchouli and vanilla, because those are the notes people remember. They disagree about the truffle, and the truffle is the strangest and most important note in Black Orchid: it gives the earthy, almost savoury darkness under the sweetness.
The second casualty is the floral middle. Black Orchid's heart is a dense cluster of ylang-ylang, gardenia, jasmine and lotus that keeps the chocolate from reading as a dessert.
