Signature line or Private Blend: how to choose without smelling

Tom Ford runs two collections side by side, and they behave differently when you buy them blind. The signature line is the broader, more familiar collection. Private Blend is the house's bolder statement: bolder materials, stranger ideas and a higher price for every millilitre. Mistakes in the second collection cost more, so that is where wearing a scent first pays off.

Start with the base notes, not the name. Tom Ford names are mood boards, and a word like "leather" or "cherry" tells you the headline but not the finish. The top of a perfume is what you notice in the first minutes. The heart is what you live with through the day. The base is what your jumper smells of the next morning, and it decides whether you still like a scent after lunch.

Black Orchid by Tom Ford

Black Orchid opens strangely, and that is the appeal. Truffle and black currant sit beside gardenia, ylang-ylang and jasmine, with bergamot, mandarin orange and Amalfi lemon keeping the first minutes bright. The heart turns to orchid, lotus, spices and fruity notes. It dries down to Mexican chocolate, patchouli and vanilla, with incense, amber, sandalwood, vetiver and white musk underneath. Earthy, sweet and a little gothic.

Black Orchid dates from 2006 and is sold as unisex. On longevity, the community leans long lasting, with eternal as the runner-up vote. Sillage votes lean strong and then enormous, so one spray is plenty to start with. Winter nights and evenings are when voters reach for it, which makes it a going-out scent rather than a desk one.

Noir Extreme by Tom Ford

Noir Extreme is the warmest and most edible of the three. It opens with cardamom, nutmeg and saffron, lifted by mandarin orange and neroli. The heart is kulfi, a spiced frozen dessert, with rose, jasmine, orange blossom and mastic. The base is vanilla, amber, sandalwood and woody notes: creamy and smooth rather than sugary.

Released in 2015, it is listed for men. Its longevity gets a clear long lasting from most community voters. Most voters in the community call its sillage moderate, so the warmth stays nearer to you than the notes suggest. Winter is the season it gets chosen for, mainly after dark.

Ombre Leather by Tom Ford

Ombre Leather is the simplest formula here and the most direct. Cardamom opens it, then leather and jasmine sambac carry the heart, over amber, moss and patchouli. Dry and slightly animalic, like a worn jacket rather than a new handbag.

A 2018 release, it is listed for men. Most community voters settle on long lasting for its longevity. Sillage votes tilt moderate, with strong in second place. For voters it is an autumn and winter choice, worn at night and into the evening.

Private Blend: woody, tobacco and dark

This is the part of Private Blend people ask about most, and the part where a small bottle matters most. All four are dense, warm and made for cold weather.

Oud Wood by Tom Ford

Oud Wood is the gentle way into oud. Agarwood opens it with Brazilian rosewood and cardamom, so the first impression is polished and spiced rather than medicinal. Sichuan pepper, sandalwood and vanilla soften the heart, and it settles on vetiver, tonka bean and amber. Calm and quietly expensive.

Tom Ford launched it in 2007 as a men's fragrance. The longevity vote tilts moderate, with long lasting as runner-up. Its sillage draws a clear moderate from most community voters, one reason it suits a working day. Voters save it for autumn and winter evenings.

Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford

Tobacco Vanille does what its name says, and does it loudly. Tobacco leaf and spicy notes open it, then vanilla, cacao, tobacco blossom and tonka bean fill the heart. Dried fruits and woody notes make the base. Sweet pipe tobacco and dark dessert, thick and warm.

Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford

Tuscan Leather is leather with a fruit-and-spice opening. Raspberry, saffron and thyme come first, which gives it a jammy, almost metallic edge. The heart is leather with jasmine and olibanum, and the base is amber, suede and woody notes. Raw at the start, soft by evening.

Also from 2007, it carries a unisex listing. A clear majority of community voters call its longevity long lasting. Most voters also put its sillage at strong, so this is a scent for open air, not a lift. Voters wear it on autumn and winter evenings and nights.

Noir de Noir by Tom Ford

Noir de Noir is a dark rose. Saffron and black truffle open it, then rose, oud and black dahlia form the heart. It dries down to vanilla, patchouli, tree moss and styrax. Earthy, velvety and resinous, the rose seen by candlelight.

It came out in 2007 and is unisex. Most voters rate how long it lasts as long lasting. The sillage vote leans strong, with enormous close behind. Winter and autumn evenings are its season for voters.

Private Blend: fruity and sweet

Two newer Private Blend perfumes built around fruit. Neither is a light fruity scent; both land on a warm, spiced base.

Lost Cherry by Tom Ford

Lost Cherry opens on bitter almond, black cherry and cherry liqueur, so the first impression is marzipan and boozy fruit. Sour cherry, plum, jasmine sambac and Turkish rose follow. The base is long: vanilla and tonka bean with cinnamon and cloves, Peru balsam and benzoin, then cedar, sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli keeping it from turning into candy.

Launched in 2018, it is listed for women. Voters lean moderate on its longevity, then long lasting. Most voters put its sillage at moderate. It is picked for autumn and winter, and above all for night.

Bitter Peach by Tom Ford

Bitter Peach is peach with a drink in hand. Peach and blood orange open it with cardamom and heliotrope, then jasmine, rum, cognac and davana take over. The base is vanilla, patchouli leaf, tonka bean, sandalwood, benzoin, cashmeran, styrax, labdanum and vetiver. Ripe, boozy and woody.

The youngest perfume here, from 2020, it is listed for women. On longevity, votes lean moderate first and long lasting second. Most community voters judge its sillage moderate. Voters reach for it on autumn and winter evenings.

Private Blend: bright, sunny and soft

Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford

Neroli Portofino is citrus and orange flowers with a clean finish. Bergamot, mandarin orange and lemon open it with lavender and myrtle. Neroli, African orange flower, orange blossom and jasmine make the heart, and amber, ambrette and angelica round it off. Fresh, green and a little soapy in the best way.

Dating from 2011, it is unisex. Longevity votes lean moderate, with long lasting next. Sillage votes lean moderate too, then strong. Spring and summer days, and the office, are where voters put it.

Soleil Blanc by Tom Ford

Soleil Blanc is warm skin on a hot day. Bergamot and pistachio open it, sharpened by pink pepper and cardamom. The heart is tuberose with jasmine and ylang-ylang, and the base is coconut over benzoin, amber and tonka bean. Creamy white flowers with a sun-oil glow.

It launched in 2016 as a women's fragrance. Most community voters mark its longevity moderate. Most voters mark its sillage moderate as well. Voters keep it for summer, by day and into the evening.

White Suede by Tom Ford

White Suede is the quietest idea in this list, though not the quietest scent. Rose and lily open it, then suede and white musk carry the heart, over sandalwood and amber. Powdery, musky and soft, like a clean cashmere scarf.

A 2009 launch, it is unisex. Most voters call its longevity long lasting. By most community votes its sillage is strong, which surprises anyone expecting a skin scent. Voters pick it for spring and autumn, day or evening.

Which Private Blend to try first

If you want to understand Private Blend rather than guess at one bottle, choose three that have nothing in common and wear them in turn.

Oud Wood is the woody one: agarwood, cardamom and sandalwood, calm enough for work. Tobacco Vanille is the rich one: tobacco leaf, vanilla and cacao, for cold nights out. Neroli Portofino is the bright one: bergamot, neroli and orange blossom, for summer days.
