Leather in a perfume is not tanned hide in a bottle. It is an accord, a small structure the perfumer builds so the finished scent reads as leather. Depending on what goes into it, that impression can be smoky and tarry, soft and powdery, or sweet and a little animal, like the inside of a new handbag.

Tuscan Leather starts with an unusual trio: raspberry, saffron and thyme. The raspberry is tart rather than jammy, the saffron adds a warm, metallic edge, and the thyme keeps it herbal. The dry-down is amber, woody notes and suede, softer and more powdery than the opening suggests.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

A leather perfume is hard to judge from a list of notes, and harder still from a paper strip. It changes as it warms up, and the dry-down is often where you decide whether you love it. So wear both before you spend on either.

1. Order a 3ml of Ombre Leather and a 3ml of Tuscan Leather. Each is around 60 sprays, enough to wear them on different days across a week or so.
2. Wear one per day, not both at once. Spray on skin, not clothes, and check back after the first hour and again in the evening.
