What does Ombre Nomade smell like?

Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton launched in 2018 and is shared by men and women. It opens with oud and raspberry together, a dark, jammy fruit against dry, smoky wood. The heart is rose, saffron and geranium, which keeps the fruit from turning sweet, and the base is frankincense and benzoin: smoke, resin and a soft balsamic warmth. It is a big, dense scent.

The whole effect depends on a few notes in tension: the raspberry against the oud, the rose against the smoke. Louis Vuitton makes one concentration, so there is no version to choose between.

1Best overall: Jean Lowe Ombre

Jean Lowe Ombre by Maison Alhambra, also sold as Jean Lowe Noir, is the clone owners on Fragrantica describe as closest. Several members on its Fragrantica page who compared it with Ombre Nomade call it very close, and say the Ombre and Noir bottles are one scent under two names.

The main difference is the raspberry. Those same members find it weaker, and the blend less refined. On the Parfumo comparison page for Jean Lowe Noir, the community ranks it smoky, oriental, woody and leathery, the same four facets as Ombre Nomade, but adds a fruity one and leans its style modern where the original leans classic.

It suits someone who wants the Ombre Nomade effect for cold-weather evenings and is happy with a slightly rougher, less jammy version. Basis: a named source. Every EU listing we found was out of stock when we checked prices, which is why its price cell is empty.

2Darker take: Royal Night

Royal Night by The Woods Collection is the smokier one. Parfumo lists oud, raspberry, leather, frankincense, rose, amberwood and birch, and its community profile follows the original's almost facet for facet: woody, leathery, oriental, smoky, spicy and animalic, with the same masculine and classic style votes.

The main difference is intensity. A member on Fragrantica who says he owns every Ombre Nomade clone recommends Royal Night as the strongest of them, and a member on Parfumo finds it a bit heavier in the smoke than the original. Not everyone agrees: another member, wearing both, finds it rounder and a little weaker in the dry-down, where the original keeps its leather, oud and raspberry.

It suits someone who wants the dark, smoky side of Ombre Nomade at full volume, for winter nights. Basis: named sources on Parfumo and Fragrantica, which split on the dry-down.

3Sweeter take: Al Qiam Gold

Al Qiam Gold by Lattafa is the lighter, more affordable route. Parfumo lists raspberry and saffron, then leather and patchouli, then oud, benzoin, gaiac wood, amber and vetiver. It keeps the raspberry-saffron top and the oud and benzoin base.

The main difference is leather and sweetness. The Parfumo community ranks it leathery first and gives it a sweet facet that Ombre Nomade's profile does not have. On its Fragrantica page, some members call it a lighter version that lacks the original's opulence, while others call it a strong clone that a friend recognised.

It suits someone who wants the style for everyday wear and finds the original too heavy. Basis: a named source.

4Lowest price: Night Shadow

Night Shadow by Zimaya is the lowest-priced bottle in the table. Parfumo lists amber, birch wood and saffron; amber, musk and rose; and ambergris, lavender and musk. It shares the rose, saffron and birch smoke.

The main difference is the oud and fruit: neither oud nor raspberry is on its list. The Parfumo community ranks it oriental, leathery, sweet and floral, with no woody or smoky facet in its top five. A clone collector on Fragrantica lists it among the Ombre Nomade clones he owns, but ranks it below The Shadow and Royal Night.

It suits someone who wants a smoky rose in the same mood for the lowest outlay, and accepts a loose match. Basis: a named source.

5Softer take: The Shadow

The Shadow by French Avenue, listed on Fragrantica under FA Paris Niche, reads as the more wearable cousin. Its Parfumo page names Ombre Nomade under "smells similar" and lists rose, raspberry and geranium; saffron, birch and amber; oud, benzoin and smoked wood. That covers nearly every note the original publishes.

The main difference is darkness. Members on its Fragrantica page range from very close to more floral, inky and less dark, and one clone collector calls it a more casual take than Royal Night.

It suits someone who likes the idea of Ombre Nomade but wants something they can wear in daylight and in milder weather. Basis: a named source. Its only EU listing was out of stock when we checked, so its price cell is empty.

6Premium alternative: No Shade For Nomade

No Shade For Nomade by Alexandria Fragrances is sold only from its maker's US shop, in dollars and at a higher price than the other clones, so there is no EU list price in the table. Parfumo gives it nine notes, the fullest list here: saffron, rose and geranium, raspberry and oud, birch and amberwood, and frankincense with benzoin. That covers everything the original publishes.

The main difference is certainty. Very few people have rated it on Parfumo, where its small community profile ranks it smoky and woody first, then spicy, sweet, leathery and resinous. There is little independent comment beyond that.

It suits someone who wants the most complete note match and does not mind ordering from outside the EU. Basis: published notes only.

What every clone gets wrong

The raspberry is the hardest part. In the original it is jammy and dark, held in check by the oud and rose. Clones tend either to weaken it, as members say of Jean Lowe Ombre, or to drop it from the list entirely, like Night Shadow. Where it is missing from the list, test for that jammy note before you buy.

The other gap is balance between smoke and resin. Ombre Nomade ends on frankincense and benzoin, soft and balsamic. Several clones push leather or birch smoke harder, which makes them louder but flatter. Royal Night is the clearest example: closest in Parfumo's community profile, and harsher for it, going by its owners.

Clone or a 10ml decant of Ombre Nomade?

Per ml, every clone we could price costs a small fraction of the original. A 10ml decant of the original is €69.90 at 10ML, which works out at €6.99/ml. Moving up to 30ml brings that down to €5.93/ml, for €177.90. If you wear this style every day in winter, a 100ml clone gives you far more to spray.

But a dense scent like this goes a long way. A 3ml decant, around 60 sprays, costs €25.90, less than most of the clone bottles in the table, and it tells you whether the raspberry and resin are worth paying for. The price per ml index puts it in context.

Authentic perfumes in the same family

Four originals share part of the Ombre Nomade structure. Oud Maracujá by Maison Crivelli is the nearest in spirit: saffron and Turkish rose with passion fruit as its fruit note, over oud, benzoin, leather and vanilla. Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian is softer, Bulgarian and Turkish rose with benzoin, violet, agarwood and vanilla. Nuit de Feu, from the same house, is darker, incense and olibanum over leather, agarwood and musk. Oud for Greatness by Initio sets saffron, lavender and nutmeg over agarwood, musk and patchouli.

How to test a dupe

Wear the original and the clone on skin on separate days rather than one on each wrist: both are strong enough to swamp each other. Judge the raspberry in the first half hour, the rose and saffron in the heart, and the resin 4 to 8 hours later on skin, which is where cheaper clones usually thin out.

A 3ml decant of Ombre Nomade is enough for a week of fair comparison. If you decide on the original, a 10ml decant gives you around 200 sprays.
