What does Oud Wood smell like?
Oud Wood is the 2007 Tom Ford Private Blend known as a smooth, polished oud, easy enough to wear to the office. The opening pairs agarwood with Brazilian rosewood and cardamom, so the first impression is a dry, lightly spiced wood rather than anything smoky or barnyard. Sichuan pepper gives the heart a tingle, and sandalwood with a touch of vanilla rounds it out. The base settles on vetiver, tonka bean and amber: warm, a little powdery, never heavy.
The thing to remember when you judge a clone is that smoothness. The oud here is a clean, sanded wood, and the cardamom and rosewood keep it airy. Most clones reach for the same notes; the difference is in how rough the oud reads and how sweet the base turns.

Tom Ford added a second concentration in 2024. The main difference: the structure. Dossier builds it as a fougère, with tobacco and coriander in the opening, patchouli in the heart, and labdanum and cedarwood in the base. Oud Wood as a 10ml decant, or a whole clone bottle?
The original Oud Wood costs €51.21 at 10ML as a 10ml decant, poured from the Tom Ford bottle, which holds around 200 sprays. Every priced clone in the table sells a whole 50ml to 100ml bottle for less than that, so per ml the clones are far cheaper; the table gives each bottle's price, size and the date we read it.
The real choice is about how often you reach for this scent. If Oud Wood is a weekend or office-day perfume for you, 200 sprays of the original may cover a whole season, and you get the smooth oud the clones only approach. If you want an oud to spray every morning, a clone bottle is the practical buy, and a 3ml of the original is still the fairest reference to hold it against.
What every clone gets wrong
The note lists make the pattern plain. The clones that follow Oud Wood note for note still differ in texture: owners keep describing a rougher, more medicinal oud in the first stretch, which the original smooths away. The ones that change the formula outright, such as Bois Oudh, Fougere Oud and Oud Mood, add patchouli, tobacco or saffron, and each addition pulls the scent darker, herbal or sweeter.
The second casualty is balance. Oud Wood sits between dry and sweet, with rosewood and cardamom keeping the vanilla and tonka in check. Clones tend to tip one way: Royal Wood and Fougere Oud lighter or drier, Oud Wonder and Oud Mood sweeter. The third is consistency. Several owners say their bottle changed a lot after weeks of rest, and one pick has reports of a new formula, so an opinion formed years ago may not describe today's bottle.

Oud Wood lives in its dry-down, and a blotter at a counter never gets that far. Put both on skin and give each a full day.
