Choosing a Kilian when you cannot smell it first

Kilian gives its perfumes names that sound like cocktails, songs and late nights. They are fun, but they tell you very little about the scent. The note list tells you far more, if you read it in order. The top notes are the first quarter of an hour. The heart is what you smell through the morning or the first part of the evening. The base is what is still on your wrist when you get home.

Almost every Kilian sits on a warm, sweet base, very often with vanilla somewhere in it. What changes from one perfume to the next is what sits on top of that base: spirits such as cognac, rum or brandy; coffee, chocolate, tobacco and smoke; soft powder and sugar; or heady white flowers. Decide which of those you want before you read about a single bottle, and most of the work is done.

Boozy Kilian perfumes

This is the part of the house most people meet first. Each of these three smells of the drink in its name for a while, then settles into something warmer and rounder. Community voters place all three in autumn and winter.

Angels' Share by Kilian

Angels' Share, a unisex release from 2020, opens on cognac, and the first minutes feel like a glass warmed in your hand. Oak, cinnamon and tonka bean come through next, with hedione adding a little air to the heart. Then the base turns it into dessert: praline and candied almond over vanilla and sandalwood.

On the community's longevity poll, most voters chose long lasting. For sillage, the vote leans moderate. Winter and autumn are its seasons in the voting. Evenings and nights are its hours. If you want one perfume to learn the house by, this is a sensible first 3ml, because its boozy, sweet shape runs through so much of the line.

Apple Brandy on the Rocks by Kilian

Apple Brandy on the Rocks starts brighter than the other two here, with bergamot and cardamom. The heart is apple, rum and brandy with pineapple, a touch of vanilla and moss. It dries down to ambroxan and cedar, so it finishes clean and woody rather than sugary. Kilian released it in 2021, for anyone.

A clear majority of community voters call its longevity moderate. Those voters say the same of its sillage. Cold months are where the voters put it. After dark is when they reach for it. Choose it if the idea of a boozy scent appeals but a dessert base does not.

Straight to Heaven by Kilian

Straight to Heaven dates from 2007 and is the one perfume here listed for men. Dried fruits and rum come first. Jasmine, nutmeg and patchouli follow, with hedione again. The base has the longest list of the three, leather and guaiac wood among Virginia cedar, amber, musk, tonka and vanilla. The result is drier and woodier than Angels' Share, with a leathery edge in the last hours.

Its longevity vote leans moderate. For sillage, most voters picked moderate. Winter and autumn are the seasons in the voting. Voters wear it in the evening and at night.

Dark and gourmand Kilian perfumes

These are the dense, after-dark members of the house. They smell edible or smoky, and sometimes both at once. Start with one or two sprays until you know how each one behaves on you, and try them on a cool day rather than a hot one.

Black Phantom by Kilian

Black Phantom begins with rum, then turns to coffee and dark chocolate, softened by almond and heliotrope. Sugar cane and caramel sit in the base with tonka, vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver. It reads like a rich dessert with a shot of coffee, and the vetiver stops the last hours from being all sugar. The house launched it in 2017 as a unisex scent.

Voters on its longevity tilt towards long lasting. Moderate edges ahead in its sillage voting. Winter alone is the season they give it. Night is when they wear it. This is the darkest of the sweet Kilians, and a good test of whether gourmand scents suit you at all.

Intoxicated by Kilian

Intoxicated, from 2014 and unisex, opens with coffee and cardamom lifted by bergamot and aldehydes. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, geranium and tobacco make the heart spicier. The base is sweet and thick, with mocha, marshmallow, sugar and caramel over vanilla, coumarin, balsam fir and patchouli. Coffee and spice first, a spiced pastry later.

The longevity voting tips towards long lasting. Sillage voting tips towards moderate. Autumn and winter are its seasons according to voters. Going out is the occasion it is picked for. Wear it next to Black Phantom if you like coffee in a perfume: Black Phantom is the darker of the two, Intoxicated the spicier.

Back to Black by Kilian

Back to Black has a busy opening of saffron, nutmeg, cardamom, coriander, raspberry and bergamot. Chamomile, olibanum and honey form the heart, and honey is what you notice most. The base brings oak, tobacco, patchouli, almond, vanilla, labdanum and cedar. Honeyed tobacco, round and rich, with a faint fruit note in the first hour. It has been around since its 2009 launch and is meant for anyone.

Strong is where the sillage voting leans, and enormous is the runner-up. Long lasting edges its longevity voting. Voters wear it in winter and autumn. Going out is its occasion. This is one to wear in 3ml before anything larger, because a scent voted strong can be a lot at a desk.

Smoking Hot by Kilian

Smoking Hot was composed by perfumer Mathieu Nardin and launched in 2023. It opens on apple, smoke and cinnamon. Tobacco, vanilla and moss take over in the heart. The base holds licorice and bourbon vanilla, with clary sage and Iso E Super. Smoky apple and tobacco at first, then a dark, licorice-tinged vanilla. It is a unisex scent.

Sweet and powdery Kilian perfumes

These two are softer than the dark group and sweeter than the white florals. Both are built on sugar and powder, and both suit someone who likes a perfume that feels warm and close rather than loud.

Love Don't Be Shy by Kilian

Love Don't Be Shy is a 2007 perfume listed for women. Pink pepper and coriander spark the opening beside bergamot and neroli. Marshmallow joins orange blossom in the heart, with rose, iris, honeysuckle and jasmine around them. Caramel and sugar lead the base, and civet, labdanum, musk and vanilla give it warmth. Think of a candied floral with a faintly animal note under the sweetness.

Rolling in Love by Kilian

Rolling in Love starts with almond milk and ambrette. Peony, raspberry and freesia soften a heart of iris and heliotrope, with hedione for lift. Below that, tuberose rests on musk, lactones, caramel, tonka bean and vanilla. Milky almond and powdery iris, with the white flower kept quiet underneath. Kilian launched it in 2019, listed for women.

Longevity voters mostly chose moderate. The sillage poll gives the same answer from most voters. Autumn and winter are where they place it. It is picked for work, which fits a scent that stays near the skin rather than filling a room.

White floral Kilian perfumes

White flowers are where the house turns heady. These three share a heart of tuberose and friends, but they sit in very different seasons, so read the votes as closely as the notes.

Good Girl Gone Bad by Kilian

Good Girl Gone Bad opens with peach and osmanthus, brightened by mandarin, bergamot and neroli, with a pinch of cinnamon. Indian tuberose fills the heart alongside May rose, narcissus and jasmine. Amber, patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood and cedar make a woody base. Fruity at first, then a full bouquet, then clean wood. This one dates from 2012 and is listed for women.

The longevity voting leans moderate. So does the sillage voting. Spring is the season voters give it. They wear it in the day and into the evening. Of the three florals, this is the brightest.

Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi by Kilian

Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi opens with neroli alone. The heart is ylang-ylang, tuberose, gardenia, Bulgarian rose and litchi. Vanilla, sandalwood and cedar make the base. Creamy, heady flowers with a little fruit, softened by vanilla and wood. A 2015 launch, it is listed for women.

Long lasting is ahead in its longevity voting. The sillage voting leans moderate. Autumn and winter are its seasons in the voting. Evening and night are when they wear it. Pick it if you want a white floral with more warmth than Good Girl Gone Bad.

Moonlight in Heaven by Kilian

Moonlight in Heaven starts sharp, with lemon and grapefruit, a little peach, pink pepper, clove and green notes. Coconut and mango then take over, with rice, orris and lactones making it creamy and tuberose adding a flower. The finish is heliotrope and vanilla over musk, tonka bean and vetiver. Sharp citrus first, then tropical fruit over a soft, sweet finish. It came out in 2016 and is listed for women.

On longevity, most voters picked moderate. Sillage voting also returns moderate from most voters. Summer is the season voters give it. Night is when they wear it. It is the one warm-weather Kilian in this guide.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

A Kilian full bottle is a considered purchase, and these perfumes change a great deal between the first spray and the evening. A card at a counter shows you the opening and little else. The only way to know is to wear one for a whole day, then again on another day.

1. Pick one from each group. Angels' Share, Black Phantom, Love Don't Be Shy and Good Girl Gone Bad cover the four moods of the house. In 3ml, each one is around 60 sprays, enough for a week or so of wear.
2. Judge the afternoon, not the first minute. Most of these scents are built on the base, so the part that decides whether you love them arrives hours after you spray.
3. Move to a bigger size for the keeper. With around 200 sprays, a 10ml decant gives you weeks of wear and slips into a pocket. The 30ml decant holds around 600 sprays and costs the least per ml, so save it for the Kilian you would miss.
