Tonka bean vs vanilla: how they differ, and 12 perfumes to tell them apart
Tonka bean is drier and nuttier, vanilla creamier and rounder. How each smells, how to tell which one leads a perfume from its notes list, and twelve perfumes to try.
In this guide
Tonka bean vs vanilla comes down to dry against creamy. Tonka bean is the drier, nuttier one, with hay, almond and tobacco running through its sweetness; vanilla is the creamier, rounder one, sweet and soft with a slightly smoky, woody edge. The two overlap, and some notes lists name both, so below you will find the two notes side by side, a way to read which one leads a perfume, and twelve perfumes where tonka bean leads, vanilla leads or the two share the base.

How tonka bean smells next to vanilla
Tonka beans are black and wrinkled outside and brown within, and their smell comes from coumarin, a molecule first isolated from the bean in the 19th century. Perfumers can now make it in a laboratory, so a notes list that says tonka bean may mean the natural absolute, the synthetic molecule or a mix of the two. If you want the full story of the bean, our guide to what tonka bean is covers it.
Next to vanilla, tonka bean smells drier. Coumarin is often described as freshly mown hay, and at higher levels it turns sweeter and more almond-like. One perfumer describes the bean's sweetness as milky. Where vanilla turns dessert-like, tonka stays warm with hay, almond or tobacco under its sweetness. Coumarin has also been part of fougère perfumes since the 19th century.
How vanilla smells next to tonka bean
Vanilla comes from an orchid, and the green pod does not yet smell of vanilla when it is picked. The familiar aroma develops during months of curing, and its main molecule is vanillin. A natural extract holds many other compounds alongside vanillin, which makes it richer and a little darker, with hints of treacle and booze. Much of the vanilla in today's perfumes is synthetic vanillin, which smells sweeter and simpler: cosy and comforting rather than dark.
Next to tonka bean, vanilla smells creamier and rounder. It tends to read as soft, enveloping warmth rather than dryness, with a gently smoky or woody side that comes through in some bases. Vanilla turns up especially often in amber and gourmand perfumes. Our guide to vanilla perfumes ranks the ones to try; here the point is simply how it differs from tonka.
Which one leads? Reading a notes list
A notes list tells you what is in a perfume, not how loudly each note speaks. Four habits help when you are choosing from a list alone, and our guide to reading perfume notes goes further.
- Look at the tier. In every perfume in this guide, whichever of the two is listed sits in the base, the last part of a perfume to arrive. When only one of them is listed, it is a good first clue to where the warmth comes from, though other sweet notes such as caramel or benzoin can share the job.
- Check the accords. "Vanilla" in a list of accords describes the overall effect of a perfume, and it can appear even when no vanilla note is listed. Tonka bean can help create it.
- A vanilla note is not always a vanilla smell. Vanilla sometimes works almost invisibly, rounding sharp edges rather than announcing itself.
- Expect blurring. Coumarin smells vanilla-like, and it was once used as a stand-in for vanilla in flavourings, and a list that names vanilla can hide coumarin, the molecule behind tonka. The surrounding notes shift the read too: next to cocoa, tonka's sweeter side can come forward; next to woods, its drier side can.
A rough clue is the company each note keeps. Tonka bean beside lavender tends to read aromatic, and beside woods it reads drier. Vanilla with caramel-like notes leans gourmand, and next to resins it turns more sensual. Where both appear in the base, they can give warmth that is not simply sugary.
The twelve perfumes at a glance
The table follows the order of the guide. Tiers follow the notes list on each perfume's 10ML page, and "Not listed" means the note is absent from that list even if an accord suggests it. "Leads" names the only one of the two notes the list gives; "Both" means the list puts both in the base.

Where tonka bean leads
In these four, tonka bean sits in the base and no vanilla note is listed.
Armani Code by Giorgio Armani
Armani Code, from 2004, opens with lemon and bergamot, and tonka bean waits in the base. Its main accords run from citrus and leather to anise and soft spice, and the notes list names tonka bean but no vanilla. Listed for men, it suits work. Most community voters rate its longevity moderate. Winter and autumn draw the most season votes.
Arabians Tonka by Montale
Arabians Tonka, launched in 2019, puts the bean in its name. Saffron and bergamot open it, a heart of oud and Bulgarian rose follows, and the base gathers amber, tonka bean, sugar cane, white musk and oakmoss. Sweet and ambery overall, it lists tonka bean but no vanilla note, with sugar cane adding its own sweetness. A unisex scent for going out, it draws a clear community vote of eternal on longevity. Its sillage vote is just as clear: enormous.
Bvlgari Man In Black by Bvlgari
Bvlgari Man In Black, from 2014, begins with spices and rum, then moves to leather, iris and tuberose. The base is guaiac wood, tonka bean and benzoin. Tonka shares the base with guaiac wood and benzoin, and its main accords mix warm spice, wood, leather and rum with amber. It is listed for men and for work. Its longevity draws votes that lean long lasting. Winter and autumn are when voters reach for it most.
Y Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent
Y Eau de Parfum, from 2018, is the arguable tonka-led pick: tonka bean sits in its base, but sweet is not among its accords. Fresh and aromatic are among them instead. Ginger, apple and bergamot open it, and geranium, sage and juniper berries follow before a base of amberwood, tonka bean, cedar, vetiver and olibanum. The listing is for men. Most community voters judge its longevity long lasting. Voters most often pick it for spring and autumn. Our YSL guide shows where it sits in the range.
Where vanilla leads
Here vanilla sits in the base and no tonka bean is listed.
By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela
By the Fireplace, from 2015, is built around smoke and spice. Cloves, orange blossom and pink pepper open it, chestnut and guaiac wood form the heart, and cashmeran, Peru balsam and vanilla finish it. The house describes the vanilla as an accord, and sweet and vanilla sit among its accords beside smoky ones. It is unisex. On longevity, most community voters say long lasting. The cold months win its season votes: winter and autumn.
Prada Candy by Prada
Prada Candy, launched in 2011, keeps its list short. Prada names benzoin, a caramel accord, musk and vanilla, and files it under amber vanilla. Its accords include caramel and powdery as well as sweet and vanilla, so the vanilla shares the sweet side with caramel. It is listed for women and suits work. Community votes on its longevity lean moderate. In the season votes, winter and autumn come out ahead.
Hypnotic Poison by Dior
Hypnotic Poison, from 1998, pairs jasmine with almond, and Dior says the vanilla blossoms in the base. Its main accords include vanilla, almond and nutty, and the almond note gives the vanilla a nutty edge. It is listed for women and for going out. Community longevity votes lean long lasting. Winter tops its season votes.
Mon Guerlain by Guerlain
Mon Guerlain, from 2017, sets lavender and jasmine sambac against a Tahitian vanilla and sandalwood base. Lavender gives the vanilla an aromatic frame, and the accords include powdery and woody. A women's listing, it suits work. Longevity votes lean moderate. Autumn and winter lead its season votes.
Where the two share the base
These four list both notes in the base. The vanilla can bring roundness and the tonka bean a drier edge, though a formula with both can blur the line between them.
Khamrah by Lattafa
Khamrah, launched in 2022, opens with cinnamon, nutmeg and bergamot. Dates, praline and tuberose make the middle, and the base holds vanilla and tonka bean with amberwood, myrrh, benzoin and akigalawood. Its accords pair sweet and warm spicy with vanilla, amber and cinnamon. It is unisex. Community voters most often pick it for winter and autumn. Night is the time of day they choose for it.
Poison Girl by Dior
Poison Girl, from 2016, opens on bitter orange before damask rose. Vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood sit in the base, and the accords add almond and powdery. Sweet and citrus are among its main accords too. Listed for women and for going out, it has longevity votes leaning long lasting. Winter is the season it is voted for.
Shalimar Eau de Parfum by Guerlain
Shalimar Eau de Parfum opens with bergamot and lemon, then moves through iris, jasmine, rose, patchouli and vetiver. Its base holds vanilla and tonka bean with incense, leather, civet, sandalwood and musk, and its main accords are amber, woody, vanilla and powdery rather than sweet. Its listing is for women and for going out. On longevity, the community leans long lasting. Its season votes favour winter and autumn. Our Guerlain guide shows more of the house.
La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme
La Vie Est Belle, from 2012, begins with black currant and pear, then iris, jasmine and orange blossom. Vanilla, praline, patchouli and tonka bean make up the base, and sweet and vanilla are among its accords. Lancôme's own description names vanilla; the tonka bean comes from the notes list on its 10ML page. It is a women's listing for going out. Its longevity votes lean long lasting. Voters pick it mostly for winter and autumn. Our gourmand perfumes guide has more sweet picks.
Wear it before you buy the bottle
You can read tonka bean vs vanilla in a notes list, but dry against creamy only shows on skin. A two-decant test settles it.
- Pick one from each side. Take one tonka-led and one vanilla-led perfume, such as Armani Code at €7.65 and By the Fireplace at €8.01 in 3ml. A 3ml decant is around 60 sprays, enough for several wears of each.
- Wear them side by side. Put one on each wrist and compare once the opening has gone. Dry and nutty points to tonka bean; soft and creamy points to vanilla.
- Then wear each alone. Give each its own day so one does not colour the other.
- Size up for the one you keep reaching for. A 10ml decant is around 200 sprays, several weeks of wear, from €22.05 for Armani Code.
If you like both, try one from the shared base. Our guide to choosing perfume without smelling it covers the rest, and what a perfume decant is explains the format. To see more tonka bean perfumes, read our tonka perfumes guide.

Frequently asked questions
- Is tonka bean the same as vanilla?
- No. Tonka bean is the seed of a South American tree and its smell comes from coumarin, while vanilla is the cured pod of an orchid and its main molecule is vanillin. They overlap, since coumarin smells somewhat like vanilla, but tonka is drier and nuttier and vanilla is creamier and rounder.
- Does tonka bean smell like vanilla?
- Partly. Coumarin has a sweet, vanilla-like smell, but tonka bean also brings hay, almond and tobacco, so it reads drier than vanilla. In a perfume the two can blur, and a notes list that names vanilla can hide coumarin.
- Which is sweeter, tonka bean or vanilla?
- It depends on the perfume, but vanilla usually reads as the creamier, more dessert-like of the two, while tonka bean has a drier sweetness with hay, almond and tobacco facets. The notes around each one shift the balance, so next to cocoa tonka's sweeter side can come forward, and next to woods its drier side can.
- Can I wear tonka bean and vanilla together?
- Yes. Several perfumes list both in the base, such as Khamrah, Poison Girl, Shalimar Eau de Parfum and La Vie Est Belle. The vanilla can bring roundness and the tonka bean a drier edge, so together they can give warmth that is not simply sugary.
- How do I choose between tonka bean and vanilla without buying two bottles?
- Wear one tonka-led and one vanilla-led perfume as 3ml decants, for example Armani Code at €7.65 and By the Fireplace at €8.01. A 3ml decant is around 60 sprays, enough to compare them over several days. A 10ml decant is around 200 sprays once you know which you prefer.
