What musk smells like

Musk is less a smell than a texture. Think of the warmth of a clean jumper, the faint sweetness of skin, a softness that rounds off whatever sits above it. It rarely announces itself. You notice it most when it is missing, because a perfume without it can feel thin and sharp at the edges.

The word once meant a secretion taken from the musk deer. That material has long since left modern perfumery, and nearly every musk you wear today was made in a laboratory. Chemists have built dozens of them, and they do not all smell alike. Some are bright and soapy, some are warm and velvety, some carry a faint fruity or woody edge. A few plants give a musky smell as well; the best known is ambrette seed, which is soft, slightly pear-like and a little wine-like.

Clean, skin and animalic: three kinds of musk

Most confusion about musk comes from using one word for three quite different effects. It helps to know which you are after before you start choosing.

• Clean musk. The white musk style: laundry, soap, a crisp white shirt. It sits under citrus and white flowers and makes them feel washed and bright.
• Skin musk. Warmer and closer. It smells like your own skin on a good day, a little salty, a little woody. Materials such as ambroxan and cashmeran often sit beside it and add an airy, mineral warmth.
• Animalic musk. The darker side: warm, sensual, a touch dirty. Modern perfumes mostly tame it, and you are more likely to meet its echo inside amber, patchouli and leather than on its own.

Musk also has a favourite partner. Paired with iris, it turns powdery and lipstick-soft, which is why so many elegant florals end on that combination. The perfumes below lean clean or skin-like; where the base turns darker, it is the woods, resins and sweet notes around the musk doing it.

Why musk is so easy to misjudge

Musk molecules are large and heavy. They rise off the skin slowly, so in the first minutes you smell the lighter notes above them and very little musk. A strip at a counter, or a quick spray on the wrist, shows you the opening and almost nothing of what you will be wearing by the afternoon.

There is a second trap. Some people barely register certain musks at all, while the person next to them smells them clearly. Your nose can also tune out a musk you wear every day, even while others still notice it. Neither means the perfume has faded. It means you cannot judge a musk from one sniff, or even from one morning.

That makes musk the strongest case for living with a perfume before you buy the bottle. How to wear a musk perfume

• Give it an hour. Musk arrives late. Judge the perfume once the opening has settled, not in the first minute.
• Do not chase it. If you stop smelling your musk by lunchtime, resist spraying again straight away. Your nose may simply have tuned it out.
• Spray skin and fabric differently. Musk often reads warmer on skin and cleaner on a scarf. Try both and keep the one you prefer.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

Musk is the note where first impressions mislead most, so give yourself time with it. A week on your own skin tells you more than any strip, description or notes list, including this one.

1. Start small. Pick two or three musks from different groups above, say one clean, one skin-like and one warm. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough for a week or so of daily wear.
