What does Kayali Vanilla 28 smell like?

Vanilla | 28 by Kayali is a unisex vanilla composed by Gabriela Chelariu. It starts on vanilla orchid and jasmine, so the first minutes feel floral and soft rather than purely edible. The heart moves to brown sugar and tonka bean. Underneath sit amber, amberwood, musk and patchouli, a woody and faintly earthy floor that keeps the sugar from going flat. The main difference is texture. Owners of both, writing on its Fragrantica page, find it very close but sweeter, milkier and smoother, with a brown sugar that turns more syrupy. The same owners describe the original as dustier and better blended.

Vanille No. 25 by Câline shares jasmine, vanilla, musk and patchouli with the original, according to Parfumo's comparison page, and most of those who voted on it rate the pair as similar.

The main difference is how far forward the vanilla sits. A member on its Parfumo page finds it comes very close to Vanilla 28 and becomes very vanillic as it dries down. Another member there, who owns the original, says the house did a good job. A separate write-up on Parfumo finds its vanilla easier to pick out than the original's, next to caramel, brown sugar and a touch of spice.

3Lowest price: Fleur Antique

Fleur Antique by La Rive comes in lowest per ml among the clones with an EU list price. On Parfumo's comparison page, most voters rate it and Vanilla 28 as similar.

The main difference is depth, and a rough start. The first write-up on its Parfumo page says it resembles Vanilla 28 once a very synthetic first minute or two has passed, but is simpler and less deep. Another member there finds it leans more gourmand than floral, despite the name.

Where the clones part ways

Read the member pages together and a pattern shows for several picks: they lean harder on sugar and lose some of the structure. Owners of Elysia Vanilla find the original dustier and better blended. Fleur Antique comes across as simpler and less deep, and Eshal Vanilla as heavier, with less depth. Ramsh Diva and Eshal Vanilla are both described as sweeter.

Owners of Elysia Vanilla find the original's dry, dusty side is what the clone softens. Judge the later hours, not the first spray.

Clone bottle or the original in a small size?

Measured per millilitre, all four clones with an EU list price come in under a decant of the original. Ramsh Diva, Vanilla Seduction and Vanilla Addiction show no EU list price in the table, so they are left out of that sum. A 10ml decant of Vanilla | 28, around 200 sprays, is €27.90 (€2.79/ml). Keep it longer with a 30ml, around 600 sprays, at €66.00 (€2.20/ml). Someone already sure they love the scent, and planning to spray it generously every day, gets more millilitres per euro from a clone bottle.

Weigh it per choice instead and the picture shifts. For €10.90 you get a 3ml decant of the original, around 60 sprays. Give it a week on your skin, then decide whether the original earns a bigger size, a clone will do, or none of them suits you.

It is the spicier, coffee-lit route to a vanilla dry-down.

Caramelo Vanilla by New Notes

Caramelo Vanilla, also from 2022, starts on caramel and vanilla flower. White flowers, frangipani, dulce de leche and cotton candy fill the heart, over vanilla pod, tonka bean and musk. It goes further into dessert territory, with a milky, sugary softness.

Allegra Magnifying Vanilla by Bvlgari

Allegra Magnifying Vanilla is an Eau de Parfum from 2021. Madagascan vanilla runs through the top and heart, and amber and musk form the base. It is the pared-down option: vanilla and warmth, without the sugar and florals layered on top.

All three come as decants, so two of them can share a fortnight on your wrists before you pick.

How to test a dupe

Start on skin rather than card: a blotter flatters any clone in its first minutes. Wear the original and the clone on skin, on different days, so one does not colour your impression of the other. Note the opening, then the heart, and wait until late in the day before you judge the dry-down. That last check is where you can weigh the sugar against the powder.
