What does Delina smell like?
Delina is a 2017 Parfums de Marly perfume that the house files as a fruity floral rose. It opens tart and bright: litchi and rhubarb, lifted by bergamot, with a pinch of nutmeg underneath. The heart is Turkish rose and peony, softened early by musk and vanilla, which is why it never reads as a green, dewy rose for long. The base stays light for its weight class, built on cashmeran, incense, cedar and Haitian vetiver, so the dry-down feels clean and a little powdery rather than sweet. The rhubarb matters more than its place in the pyramid suggests. It gives Delina the sour edge that stops the litchi and rose from turning into sweets, and it is the note clones most often change: sharper in some, missing in others.
Delina, Delina Exclusif and Delina La Rosée
The house has built two more perfumes on the same rose. Delina Exclusif, from 2018, is the evening version: pear and grapefruit join the litchi, and oud and incense sit beside the Turkish rose over vanilla, amber and woody notes. A 10ml decant or a clone bottle?
At 10ML, Delina costs €48.90 for a 10ml decant filled from the original bottle. It holds around 200 sprays: roughly two months at three a day, or most of a year if you rotate it with other perfumes. That price is higher than each of the three lowest-priced clone bottles in the table, and those hold a full 100ml, so on price per ml every clone wins by a wide margin.
What the decant buys is the part the clones move: the tart rhubarb at the top and the clean cashmeran-and-cedar finish. If you want a pink rose to spray every morning, a clone bottle is the practical buy. If you wear Delina for dinners, weddings and weekends, a 10ml decant of the original may carry you further than you expect. The two sister perfumes cost about the same: Delina Exclusif is €47.90 and Delina La Rosée €46.90 for the same 10ml decant.
What every clone misses
Line the picks up and a pattern shows. Nearly all of them get the litchi and the rose right, because those are the loudest parts of Delina. What moves is the balance around them.
The rhubarb is the first thing to shift. It comes out sharper in some bottles, softer in others, and in Rose 01 the forum talk is about rose and musk rather than tartness. Without that sour thread the rose drifts sweeter.
The second is the finish. Delina's base is cashmeran, cedar and vetiver, which is why it dries down clean. Clones that swap in amber, benzoin or heavier musks list a warmer base, and several owners notice a musk that is louder or more synthetic than the original's.
The third is texture. The words owners use for Delina are smooth, airy and softly powdery. The words they use for the clones are punchier, sharper, sweeter or denser. None of that makes a clone bad; it tells you which way each one leans.
How to test a dupe
Clones are built to win the opening, so a blotter flatters them. Judge each one on skin, hours after you spray it.
- Learn the original first. A 3ml decant of Delina is enough for several days of wear, so you know its afternoon before you compare anything with it.
- Wear the clone on another day, on the same wrist, with the same number of sprays. Smell it after four hours and again after eight; weather and skin both shift a perfume.
- Let a newly bought bottle rest for a couple of weeks before you decide. A perfume can settle after opening, and a first spray is not its final word.
- Ask one question at the end of the day: is the tart, clean finish still there, or has it gone sweet?
