What does Erba Pura smell like?

Erba Pura by Xerjoff is a unisex fruit-and-musk perfume built in three clear layers. It opens on Sicilian orange, Calabrian bergamot and lemon, a sweet, juicy citrus rather than a sharp one. The heart is simply listed as Mediterranean fruit: the house never says which, which is part of its appeal and part of the puzzle for anyone trying to match it. Underneath sit white musk, Madagascar vanilla and amber, and that warm, powdery base is what people remember once the citrus has gone. The house's own Erba Pura page gives the same short list.

Philos Pura by Maison Alhambra lists every note Xerjoff publishes for Erba Pura: orange, bergamot and lemon on top, fruit in the middle, then vanilla, white musk and amber. No other pick in this guide mirrors the pyramid so closely on paper.

The main difference is in the opening. The pyramid is the same list of names, but a list cannot tell you how much of each is in the bottle, and the fruit heart is where the two are most likely to part: Xerjoff's is unnamed, so every house that follows it has to decide for itself which fruit to use. The main difference is strength. An extrait is a denser concentration than Erba Pura's eau de parfum, so expect it to sit heavier on skin in the first hour; that is our inference from the label, not something a source measured. The fruit is harder to read on paper: Fragrantica's note list names no fruit at all, and Parfumo's comparison lists fruity notes for both, and a member on Parfumo calls it a fruit bomb like the original.

It suits the wearer who wants Erba Pura's fruit and musk at extrait strength: the same Parfumo member calls it Erba Pura as an extrait, and the best performer of the four Erba Pura inspired-bys they tried. Premium alternative: Amber Oud Gold Edition

Amber Oud Gold Edition by Al Haramain is one of the names that comes up next to Erba Pura, and Parfumo's comparison page shows a large majority of voting members judging the two similar. It shares bergamot, fruit, amber, vanilla and musk with the original.

The main difference is that it names what Xerjoff leaves open, and adds to it. Its Fragrantica pyramid puts green notes beside the bergamot, melon and pineapple in the heart with a gourmand accord, and woody notes in the base. So the opening is greener and less of an orange-lemon burst, the middle is more tropical, and the finish carries more wood than Erba Pura's plain vanilla and musk. It is its own perfume in the same family.

It suits someone who wants the fruity-amber effect with more body, for evenings and cooler weather. It is also the most expensive clone in the table. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo page above, and a Basenotes member who writes that it covers most of the same ground as Erba Pura for much less money.

Softer take: Ana Abiyedh

Ana Abiyedh by Lattafa shares bergamot, orange, vanilla, musk and amber with Erba Pura, and names its fruit: pear. Parfumo's comparison page shows a large majority of voting members judging the two similar, and a Fragrantica forum thread on Erba Pura lists it among the perfumes built in its image.

The main difference is scale. Its shared notes stop at bergamot and orange, with no lemon, and a single pear stands in for Erba Pura's crowd of fruit. With less on top, the musk and vanilla arrive sooner, so it reads as a quieter, more powdery version of the idea rather than the full juicy opening. That is our reading of the published notes.

Sweeter take: Royal Amber

Royal Amber by Orientica shares bergamot, amber, vanilla and musk with Erba Pura. Its Fragrantica listing for the eau de parfum names melon and pineapple for the fruit, and Erba Pura appears among the perfumes its members like alongside it.

The main difference is the direction of the fruit. Melon and pineapple over amber and vanilla lean tropical and sugary, and there is no orange or lemon in the shared notes to cut them. Expect a rounder, sweeter perfume with less citrus sparkle. The comparison is for the eau de parfum; the extrait of the same name is a different listing, so check which one you are buying.

Darker take: King

King by Bharara lists bergamot, orange and lemon, fruity notes, then amber, vanilla and musk, and Parfumo's comparison page shows nearly all voting members judging the eau de parfum similar to Erba Pura.

The main difference comes late. An owner in a Fragrantica forum thread says it opens more citrusy than Ana Abiyedh but dries down to a strong cedar note by the end of the day. Erba Pura has no wood listed at all, so King finishes drier and woodier, less sweet than the original.

It suits someone who likes the Erba Pura opening but finds the vanilla-musk finish too sweet, and who wants a version that leans towards a classic masculine woody base. It has no EU list price. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo page and the forum thread above.

What every clone gets wrong

The hardest part of Erba Pura to match is the part the house never names. Its heart is listed as fruits and nothing more, so every clone fills that gap its own way: melon and pineapple in Amber Oud Gold Edition and Royal Amber, pear in Ana Abiyedh, unnamed fruity notes in Philos Pura and King. Each choice moves the perfume a little away from the original, towards tropical, towards pear, or towards nothing in particular.

The second gap is balance. Two perfumes can list the same six notes and still smell unlike each other, because a note list says nothing about quantities or the quality of the materials. The comparison pages cited here show that many people find these pairs similar, but similar is not the same thing as interchangeable, and none of these houses claims to use Xerjoff's formula.

Erba Pura clones vs the original: the price per ml

Set against any clone here, the house's own bottle costs several times more for each ml, so starting with a 3ml decant of the original is the gentlest way to try the real perfume.

Is a 10ml decant of Erba Pura worth it over a clone?

Per ml, every priced clone in the table is far cheaper than the original, so for spraying freely all summer a clone bottle goes further. For a few weeks of wear the sums change. A 3ml decant of Erba Pura costs €11.07 at 10ML, about 60 sprays, and a 10ml decant costs €30.60 (€3.06/ml), around 200 sprays, filled from the original bottle. The 30ml at €76.95 (€2.57/ml) is the best value per ml of the three, around 600 sprays.

A 3ml costs less than any priced clone bottle in the table, and a week of wear tells you which part you love. If it is the juicy fruit heart, the original is the only sure thing; if it is the musk and vanilla base, Philos Pura and Pure Nectar both list that base in full.

How to test a dupe

Test on skin, never on paper alone. Paper shows you the opening; skin shows you the base, and with Erba Pura the base is most of the wear. Spray once on the inside of the wrist and smell it again at midday and in the evening, not only in the first minutes.

Wear the original and the alternative on different days rather than one on each arm. Worn together, the louder one takes over and the quieter one seems weak.
