What does XJ 1861 Naxos smell like?

XJ 1861 Naxos is the honey-and-tobacco scent Xerjoff launched in 2015. It opens bright, with lavender, bergamot and lemon. As it settles it turns golden: honey, cinnamon, cashmeran and jasmine sambac, sweet but never sticky, because the lavender keeps air moving through it. The base settles on tobacco leaf, vanilla and tonka bean, so the dry-down smells like a honeyed pipe pouch with a vanilla edge. The house's own Naxos page lists much the same pyramid, with one extra note in the top. There are no versions to choose between: Naxos is sold as one eau de parfum, with no flanker or other concentration, so every clone below aims at the same target. Its listed accords run sweet, vanilla, honey, tobacco and lavender first.

Best overall: Italia

Italia by Rayhaan shares more of the Naxos structure than any other pick. Its Fragrantica listing gives lavender, lemon and bergamot on top, honey, cinnamon, cashmeran and jasmine in the heart, and tobacco leaf, vanilla and tonka in the base. That is the Naxos pyramid, stage for stage.

The main difference is the tobacco. A long Parfumo write-up on Italia says the opening lands close to Naxos, citrus and lavender with the first hint of honey, but that the tobacco is hard to find later on. Tonka takes over the base, and the finish turns more powdery and sweeter than the original. The same writer finds it less deep. Other Parfumo members call it a little fresher than Naxos, which some prefer.

Italia suits someone who loves the Naxos opening and the honey heart and can live without the smoky tobacco at the end. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo page for Italia, where Naxos also heads the list of similar perfumes.

Closest on the dry-down: Ramad

Ramad by Arabiyat Prestige starts somewhere else and arrives close. Its listed notes share lemon, lavender, cinnamon, tobacco and tonka with Naxos, and on Fragrantica members who own both describe the two as very similar once the opening has passed.

The main difference is honey. Ramad lists none, and it opens on bitter orange, cardamom and spearmint rather than a bergamot sparkle, with clary sage and nutmeg in the heart. One statement on its Parfumo page sums it up as close but leaning more towards tobacco and lavender and less sweet; another finds Naxos itself a little darker and spicier. One owner reports that it fades quickly on them, so wear it before you commit.

Ramad suits someone who finds Naxos too sweet and wants the tobacco-lavender base with no honey listed. The drier, more aromatic opening also makes it easier to wear in milder weather. Basis: named sources, the Fragrantica and Parfumo listings linked above.

Fresher take: Fierte Luna

Fierte Luna by French Avenue lists nearly the same notes as Naxos: bergamot, lavender and lemon; cashmeran, cinnamon, honey and jasmine; tobacco, tonka and vanilla. Member comments on Fragrantica compare it directly with Naxos and find the character close, with a less airy opening and softer tobacco.

The main difference is weight. One member on its Parfumo page calls it the fresher younger brother of Naxos, with the tobacco pulled back so it works across more seasons. A longer Parfumo write-up is harder on it: fresher, yes, but with less honey, very little tobacco and lavender and cinnamon doing most of the talking. It is also the most expensive clone in the table.

Fierte Luna suits someone who likes the Naxos idea in spring and early autumn, when the full honey-tobacco depth feels heavy. If the tobacco is the part you love, look at the next pick instead. Basis: named sources, the Parfumo and Fragrantica listings linked above.

Darker take: Muharib

Muharib by Maison Asrar lists Provençal lavender, bergamot and lemon on top, cashmere, cinnamon and honey in the heart, and tobacco, jasmine and tonka in the base, so on paper it tracks Naxos closely. Parfumo lists Naxos first among the perfumes similar to it.

The main difference is the tone. A Parfumo member who has worn Naxos for years finds Muharib noticeably darker: honey and tobacco without the vanilla lift, denser and stickier, with none of the sunny feel. The same member tried Italia and found it lighter, and says Naxos works in summer while Muharib does not. Vanilla is also missing from its listed base.

Sweeter take: Ateeq

Ateeq by Nusuk shares honey, cinnamon, lavender, jasmine, tobacco, tonka and vanilla with Naxos. Its top is different: grapefruit, lime and amber sit next to the honey instead of bergamot and lemon, and the base adds coumarin, cedarwood and musk.

The main difference is density. On Fragrantica, one member who compared the two finds Naxos fresher and airier and Ateeq thicker and sweeter. A member on its Parfumo page adds that the tobacco is darker and smokier than the greener, leafier tobacco of Naxos, and that the whole thing leans more ambery. Opinion on how close it gets is split: one long Parfumo write-up calls it the nearest of the alternatives that writer tried.

Lowest price: Voux Elegante

Voux Elegante by Paris Corner, also sold under the Emir name, lists lavender, bergamot, honey, cashmeran, cinnamon, jasmine, tobacco, vanilla and tonka. Of the six, it has the lowest bottle price in the table.

The main difference is life. Member comments on Fragrantica are split: pleasant, but flatter than Naxos, with more lavender and less tobacco and cinnamon. Several members report weak wear until the bottle has rested for a while.

What every clone gets wrong

Read the six picks together and a pattern appears. The clones either keep the citrus opening and lose the tobacco, like Italia and Fierte Luna, or keep the tobacco and lose the lift, like Muharib and Ateeq. Ramad keeps the dry-down by dropping the honey altogether. The balance is the hard part: bright top, sweet middle and a smoky base, all at once.

The second thing wearers mention is texture. Parfumo write-ups on Italia and Fierte Luna both describe the honey as less refined than in the original. That is not something a note list can show, and it is the main reason to smell the original before you decide.

How to test a dupe

Test on skin, not paper. A blotter shows you the opening; your skin shows you the dry-down, which is where most clones either hold up or fall away. Spray once on the inside of the wrist and wait several hours before you judge, checking at the start, after an hour and again in the evening.

Give the original one day and the clone another. Two scents on two arms bleed into each other, and you end up judging the blend. Note what you smell at each check: the citrus, the honey, the tobacco. If the part you love disappears in the clone, you have your answer.

Give a new clone bottle a few weeks before you decide, because wearers of several picks here say theirs improved with rest.
