Quick answer

The best Dior Sauvage dupe overall is Modest Une Pour Homme by Afnan, which several Fragrantica members find close to the eau de toilette. Ventana by Armaf is the fresher, fruitier option, and Kuro by Ajmal has the lowest bottle price. Every clone here targets the original eau de toilette. Want the real thing? What does Sauvage smell like?

Sauvage is the peppery, ambroxan-heavy eau de toilette Dior launched in 2015. The first spray is sharp and clean: Calabrian bergamot and pepper, bright enough to read as citrus from across a room. Underneath sits a busy heart of Sichuan pepper, pink pepper, lavender, geranium, elemi, vetiver and patchouli, which gives it that fresh, slightly herbal spice. The base is ambroxan with cedar and labdanum, a warm, mineral, skin-like glow that is the part most people recognise. Its listed accords run fresh spicy, amber, citrus and aromatic first.

Sauvage has grown into a family, and three of its flankers are on 10ML. They are separate perfumes, not stronger bottles of the same one, and none of the clones below aims at them.

Or wear the original first

Sauvage by Dior, filled from the original bottle. Choose a size:

Best overall: Modest Une Pour Homme

Modest Une Pour Homme by Afnan has, on its Parfumo page, Calabrian bergamot, pepper and lavender on top, elemi, geranium and pink pepper in the heart, and ambroxan, vetiver and patchouli underneath. That is most of the Sauvage structure, and Parfumo lists both Sauvage concentrations first among similar perfumes. On its Fragrantica page, several members compare it directly with the eau de toilette and find it close.

The main difference is the edge. Fragrantica members describe a smoother opening, and one finds it soapier, without the sharp ambroxan punch of the original. A Parfumo member who compared them finds more citrus, less ambroxan and none of the faint metallic note of the original, while the overall character holds. Several Fragrantica members also report weak performance from newer bottles.

It suits someone who wears Sauvage for its easy, clean daytime freshness and does not need the sharp first minutes. Basis: named sources, its Fragrantica and Parfumo pages (linked above).

Fresher take: Ventana

Ventana by Armaf is built on a fruitier top: bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin and red fruits, over patchouli, geranium, vetiver and lavender, with cedar, labdanum and amber. Its Parfumo page lists the Sauvage eau de toilette first among similar perfumes.

The main difference is pepper. A Parfumo member who wore Ventana on one wrist and Sauvage on the other found a fruitier opening against the peppery Dior, with the resemblance growing in the dry-down as lavender, vetiver and cedar come through. Other members sum it up as Sauvage with less pepper and more lavender. In a Fragrantica thread comparing the two, several owners of both find it very close, though one finds it shorter-lived, and members on its Basenotes page agree it works as a Sauvage clone. On Fragrantica, one member who owned several Sauvage-style clones found it too citrusy.

It suits someone who likes Sauvage in hot weather and would trade some bite for brightness. Basis: named sources on Parfumo, Fragrantica and Basenotes, linked in this section.

Lowest price: Kuro

Kuro by Ajmal has the lowest bottle price in the table; per ml, Hunter Intense's larger bottle works out almost the same. It sits in the same fresh, peppery, woody lane as Sauvage. Its Parfumo page lists the Sauvage eau de toilette and eau de parfum as similar perfumes, along with Luna Rossa Carbon by Prada.

The main difference is sharpness, and members do not agree on it. One Parfumo member calls it a close, ambroxan-heavy take on the eau de toilette with the same shower-fresh feel. Another finds the lavender smooth and a little soapy, with a trace of vetiver, and the whole thing less sharp than Sauvage. On its Fragrantica page, members hear the Sauvage character but sweeter, woodier and less metallic, with a slight smokiness, and one who worked through several Sauvage clones found it too earthy and herbal.

It suits someone who wants the style at the lowest outlay and finds Sauvage a little loud: a rounder, more lavender-led version for the office. Basis: named sources (Kuro's own Parfumo and Fragrantica pages).

Darker take: Club de Nuit Urban Man Elixir

Armaf's Club de Nuit Urban Man Elixir shares bergamot, pink pepper, elemi, lavender, geranium, vetiver, ambroxan, patchouli, cedar and labdanum with Sauvage. It adds orange blossom, jasmine, saffron, tagetes and amber. Its Parfumo page lists both Sauvage concentrations first among similar perfumes.

The main difference is warmth. Parfumo members describe a loud, pineapple-and-wood opening that turns into Sauvage over time, then a smoky edge and a sweeter dry-down that one member likens to the Sauvage eau de parfum rather than the eau de toilette. It is less sharp than the original all the way through. A member on the Fragrantica page of Salvo Intense also treats it as a Sauvage clone.

It suits someone who wants Sauvage for evenings out, with more sweetness and smoke. Parfumo members describe it as a strong performer, so go easy on the sprays. Basis: named sources on Parfumo and Fragrantica, both linked in this section.

Sweeter take: Hunter Intense

Hunter Intense by Armaf lists bergamot, cardamom, lemon and mandarin, then geranium, lavender, pink pepper and rose, then cedar, labdanum, musk, patchouli and vetiver. Its Parfumo page lists Invictus by Rabanne and the Sauvage eau de toilette as its closest matches.

The main difference is sugar. Parfumo members describe it as close to Sauvage but sweeter and more of a club scent, and several read it as a blend of the two: an Invictus opening that settles into a sweetened version of the Sauvage heart. One calls it an aquatic Sauvage with added sweetness. Views on its Fragrantica page are split between an Invictus opening that dries down towards Sauvage and no Sauvage at all, and in a Fragrantica forum thread one member finds the same basic feel but harsher.

It suits someone who likes Sauvage and also likes sweeter fresh scents, and wants one bottle for weekends. Basis: named sources, the Parfumo and Fragrantica pages linked above.

Softer take: Suave

Suave by Fragrance World is aimed at the eau de toilette. On its Fragrantica page, member comments call it a Sauvage eau de toilette dupe, and one points out that the house sells the same pyramid under a second name.

The main difference is strength. The same page carries a warning from a member that a newer batch is weaker than the old one, so expect a quieter, thinner version of the original rather than its full bite. That is the only evidence from the fragrance databases we could find on how it wears, which is why it sits last here. The listing we priced bundles the bottle with a deodorant.

It suits someone who wants a low-key version of Sauvage for close-range, everyday wear. Basis: a named source, the Fragrantica page linked above.

What every clone gets wrong

Sauvage lives on a knife edge between sharp and smooth. The pepper and bergamot bite; the ambroxan base softens everything into a warm, clean glow. The clones mostly sand down the bite. Ventana swaps pepper for fruit, Modest Une softens the opening, Kuro rounds it with lavender, Suave turns the volume down, and Hunter Intense and the Club de Nuit add sugar. One thing members note as missing is the faint metallic, mineral sharpness of the original, which is exactly what some wearers dislike and others love.

The second point is the version. The clones in this guide aim at the eau de toilette. If the Sauvage you love is the Elixir or the Extrait, none of them will get you there; those are different perfumes, and the flanker table above is the place to start.

Six clone bottles, or one decant of the original?

On bottle price alone, every clone in the table costs less than a full bottle of Sauvage. What a clone cannot tell you is whether the original, on your skin, is worth it. A small size answers that question for far less. (If you like numbers, our price per ml index lists every perfume we stock by what each ml costs.)

At 10ML, Sauvage comes from the Dior bottle in three sizes. A 3ml decant, around 60 sprays, costs €9.90 and lasts about a week of wear. The 10ml decant, €29.90 or €2.99/ml, gives around 200 sprays and weeks of daily use. The 30ml decant is €76.90 at €2.56/ml, around 600 sprays, and the best value of the three per ml. Hold the 10ml decant price up against the clone bottles in the table: for about what one of the dearer clones costs, you can wear the real Sauvage for weeks.

Originals with a similar feel

If what you want is the fresh, ambroxan-led style rather than Sauvage itself, three original perfumes we stock share parts of it.

Luna Rossa Carbon by Prada pairs bergamot and pepper with lavender and a metallic, watery heart over ambroxan and patchouli. It is the nearest relative: Parfumo lists it beside Sauvage among the perfumes similar to Kuro.

Explorer by Montblanc opens on bergamot, pink pepper and clary sage and settles on vetiver, leather, ambroxan and patchouli. It is woodier and a touch leathery.

Y Eau de Toilette by Yves Saint Laurent layers aldehydes, bergamot and ginger over geranium, lavender and sage, with cedar and ambergris. It is cleaner and more aromatic. For the science behind that warm base, read our guide to ambergris and ambroxan.

How to test a dupe

Skip the paper strip. Sauvage and its clones are closest in the dry-down, so the opening a strip shows you is the least useful part. Spray the inside of one wrist, once, and live with it for the day: smell it on application, around lunchtime and before bed.

Try the original and a clone on separate days. On the same day they mix in the air around you and you stop knowing which is which. Listen for three things: the bergamot at the start, the pepper in the middle and the warmth of the ambroxan at the end. Where a clone goes quiet or turns sweet, you have found its difference.

Give any clone a few wears before you judge it, and compare against the real Sauvage, not a memory of a department-store blotter. A 3ml decant of Sauvage is enough for a fair week. Still deciding on a full bottle? Our page on the blind buy alternative explains the approach, and what a perfume decant is covers how every 10ML decant is filled.
