Why is perfume so expensive? Where the money in a bottle goes, per ml, in 2026
Filed accounts, EU tax tables and supplier price lists show where the money in a perfume bottle goes in 2026, and which popular cost claims no reputable source backs.
In this guide
Why is perfume so expensive? Mostly because of what surrounds the liquid. In Coty's prestige business in the fiscal year to 30 June 2025, cost of sales (making the goods, freight and licence royalties) took 29.4%1 of net revenues and advertising 27.7%1, by 10ML analysis of its 10-K. VAT then adds up to 27%2 on top, in Hungary in 2026, according to the Tax Foundation.

The short version: a bottle's price pays for the name, the advertising and the shop as much as for the scent. This page takes each layer from a filing, a tax table or a supplier price list, and says plainly where no reliable number exists. It is part of 10ML's perfume market and prices research.

How a perfume company spends each euro of sales
In Coty's prestige business in the fiscal year to 30 June 2025, cost of sales, which covers making the goods, freight and licence royalties, took 29.4%1 of net revenues and advertising and promotion 27.7%1, leaving an operating margin of 15.2%1, by 10ML analysis of Coty's 10-K segment note. Advertising cost almost as much as the whole cost of sales line.
The segment note in Coty's 10-K reports Prestige net revenues of US$3.82B1 for the fiscal year to 30 June 2025. The Prestige segment is mostly prestige fragrance, which makes it the closest filed picture of a perfume business at scale. Coty reports in US dollars; the shares work the same way in any currency.
Cost of sales in the segment was US$1.12B1, according to the same note. That line covers the liquid, the bottle, the cap, the box, production and freight, and, Coty's 10-K says, the royalties it pays on licensed brands. Advertising and consumer promotion came to US$1.06B1. Operating income was US$580.6M1.
| Line | Amount | Share of net revenues |
|---|---|---|
| Net revenues | US$3.82B1 | All of it |
| Cost of sales | US$1.12B1 | 29.4%1 |
| Advertising and consumer promotion | US$1.06B1 | 27.7%1 |
| Operating income | US$580.6M1 | 15.2%1 |
The rest went to the note's other segment items, which Coty says mainly cover administration, logistics, stock compensation, amortisation and restructuring. The operating margin was roughly half the cost of sales share. In other words, the profit left at the end was a smaller slice than cost of sales.
Interparfums tells a similar story from a different angle. Its 2025 results report a consolidated gross margin of 63.6%4 for 2025. That means cost of sales took a little over a third of its net sales that year.
One caveat runs through every filed ratio on this page. These are shares of the brand's net revenue: what shops and distributors pay the brand. They are not shares of the price on the shelf, which also carries the shop's margin and VAT.
For scale, Statista projects that the fragrances market worldwide will generate US$56.65B5 in 2026. Statista's scope is perfume and eau de toilette sold to consumers online and offline, without room scents or deodorants. It is a projection, and Statista's page gives no update date.
How much of the price is the perfume itself
No reputable source publishes the share of the liquid. The closest filed number is cost of sales, which also covers the bottle, cap, box, production and freight, and at Coty the licence royalties too.
In Coty's prestige segment that line was 29.4%1 of net revenues in the fiscal year to 30 June 2025, by 10ML analysis of Coty's 10-K. The liquid can only be part of that line. So the filing sets a ceiling for the liquid's share of the brand's revenue, not a figure.
A widely repeated claim says the liquid is only a few per cent of a perfume's price. 10ML's research found no filing and no reputable reporting behind it. The claim appears on brand and shop pages, usually without a source. The same is true of the retail margins quoted on those pages. 10ML leaves both out, and says so here, rather than repeat them.
What would answer the question is a bill of materials from a brand. It would separate the perfume concentrate, the alcohol, the glass, the cap and the packaging, per bottle. None of the filings used in this research gives one.
The ceiling is also a share of the brand's revenue, not of the shelf price. Once a shop adds its margin and the state adds VAT, the share of the shelf price that pays for the liquid is smaller again.
The liquid itself is a blend. Perfumers mix aroma materials, some made in a lab and some taken from plants, into a concentrate, then dilute it in alcohol. Materials vary enormously in price per kilo, which is the subject of the section on raw materials below.
Advertising, licences and royalties: the costs behind the name
Interparfums spent 19.8%4 of 2025 net sales on advertising and promotion and paid 8.2%3 in licence royalties. Products representing 37%6 of Coty's sales in the fiscal year to 30 June 2025 came from licensed brands, according to Coty's 10-K.
Many designer perfumes are made under licence. The fashion house owns the name. A perfume group develops, makes and sells the scent, and pays the owner of the name a royalty on sales.
Interparfums' 2025 results put its advertising and promotion spend at 19.8%4 of net sales. Its 10-K for 2025 puts royalty expense at 8.2%3 of net sales. Advertising took more than twice as much as royalties that year.
The same 2025 results report selling, general and administrative expenses of 45.5%4 of net sales. That is the broad line for running and selling the business.
Coty's 10-K says products representing 37%6 of its sales in the fiscal year to 30 June 2025 are under exclusive licence agreements. That figure covers all of Coty, not just prestige fragrance.
So when you ask why designer perfumes cost so much, the filings point to two costs tied to the name. For a licensed brand, part of each sale goes to the owner of the name as a royalty. At Interparfums, a larger share went to the advertising that makes the name known.
What the filings do not say is how much of one particular bottle's price is advertising. These are company-wide ratios, averaged across every brand, country and sales channel the company has.
What the shop and the tax add on top
The filed ratios stop at the brand's net revenue; the shop's margin and VAT come on top. The Tax Foundation's table for 2026 puts VAT alone at 17%2 in Luxembourg, the EU's low end, and 27%2 in Hungary, the EU's high end.
No reputable source publishes shop margins for perfume. The figures quoted online come from brand and shop pages, and 10ML does not repeat them.
VAT is the layer that is published. The Tax Foundation's table of VAT rates in Europe as of January 2026 builds on the European Commission's Taxes in Europe Database. It lists Germany at 19%2, France at 20%2, Italy at 22%2 and Spain at 21%2. Perfume is taxed at the standard rate across the EU.

Source: 2. Tax Foundation: VAT Rates in Europe, as of January 2026
VAT is charged on the pre-tax price, so its share of a VAT-inclusive shelf price is smaller than the rate. At Luxembourg's 17%2, VAT is about a seventh of the shelf price. At Germany's 19%2, it is a little under a sixth. At France's 20%2, it is exactly a sixth. At Hungary's 27%2, it is a little over a fifth.
That means the same pre-tax price lands on the shelf at different prices in different countries before any shop sets its own margin. The country-by-country comparison of shelf prices is in perfume prices per ml across Europe.
10ML charges one price in euros in every EU country it delivers to, with VAT included. The price you see at 10ML does not change with the country you order from.
From a price per kilo to a price per millilitre
Iso E Super and Hedione cost US$95/kg7 in a 1 kg pack at Perfumer's Apprentice, while orris butter works out to US$24,095/kg8. A finished perfume dilutes its materials in alcohol, so a single material rarely explains a bottle's price.
Perfumer's Apprentice lists Iso E Super, made by IFF, at US$95/kg7 in a 1 kg pack in 2026. It lists Hedione at US$95/kg9 in a 1 kg pack. In a far larger pack, the same supplier's Hedione works out to US$59/kg9, by 10ML arithmetic. Buying in bulk lowers the price per kilo.
Ambroxan crystals cost US$1,097/kg10 in a 1 kg pack at Perfumer's Apprentice. That is more than ten times the price of Iso E Super. Ambroxan is one of the molecules perfumers use in place of natural ambergris; what ambergris is, and how ambroxan differs explains the two.
Naturals sit far higher. Eden Botanicals' catalogue lists orris butter, the extract of iris root, at a price that works out to US$24,095/kg8, by 10ML arithmetic from a small pack. That is over two hundred times the price per kilo of Iso E Super.
The same catalogue lists Vietnamese agarwood oil, the material behind oud, at US$25.40/ml8. It lists Turkish rose otto at US$35.10/ml8. Both are worked out per ml by 10ML from a bottle price, assuming the listed volume.
These are small-pack retail prices for perfumers. Industrial buyers pay contract prices that are not published, and the Hedione gap shows how much pack size matters. So the prices here are not what a large perfume group pays; its contract prices are not published.
A finished perfume is a blend of many materials diluted in alcohol. A single material's price per kilo is spread across every millilitre of the blend. Houses do not publish their formulas, so the data cannot say how much orris or oud a given perfume holds.
What a millilitre costs you, by size and by house type
Across the perfumes 10ML stocks, the median 30ml decant costs €2.57/ml11 per ml (10ML member price, VAT included). At that size, the niche median is 48%11 higher per ml than the designer median.
The 10ML Price-per-ml Index covers 1,06011 perfumes, every one 10ML sells with at least one priced size. Across the perfumes 10ML stocks, the median 3ml decant costs €3.60/ml11 per ml and the median 10ml decant €3.05/ml11 per ml, at the 10ML member price, VAT included. For perfumes sold in both sizes, moving from 3ml to 30ml saves 28%11 per ml at the median.

By house type at 30ml, the designer median is €2.07/ml11 per ml and the niche median €3.06/ml11 per ml, 10ML member price, VAT included, across the perfumes 10ML stocks. Niche or designer follows 10ML's catalogue. The measured gap, size by size, is in how much more niche costs than designer per ml.
The index measures the gap, not its cause. No filing in this research breaks out the costs of niche houses, so no public number says how much of the gap is materials, advertising or margin. For what separates the two kinds of house beyond price, read what separates niche from designer perfume.
Five perfumes from the index show the spread. Sauvage by Dior and Good Girl by Carolina Herrera sit in the designer group. Aventus by Creed, Santal 33 by Le Labo and Angels' Share by By Kilian sit in the niche group.
| Perfume | Type | 3ml decant | 10ml decant | 30ml decant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sauvage | Designer | €2.70/ml | €2.34/ml | €2.08/ml |
| Good Girl | Designer | €2.97/ml | €2.57/ml | €2.22/ml |
| Aventus | Niche | €3.96/ml | €3.59/ml | €3.60/ml |
| Santal 33 | Niche | €5.64/ml | €5.11/ml | €4.11/ml |
| Angels' Share | Niche | €6.45/ml | €5.14/ml | €4.29/ml |
A 30ml decant of Aventus costs €107.91 at 10ML today, against €62.37 for Sauvage. These are live prices and move with the catalogue. If you are weighing a small bottle against a full one, decant or full bottle sets out when each makes sense.
What pushed prices up in 2025 and 2026
Tax is the part that is documented: Romania raised its standard VAT rate on 1 August 20252 and Estonia on 1 July 20252, according to the Tax Foundation.
Romania went from 19%2 to 21%2. Estonia went from 22%2 to 24%2. Where a shop passed the change on in full, the shelf price of the same bottle rose with it.
The filings show revenue, not price. Coty's fiscal 2026 results report Prestige net revenues of US$3.81B12 for the fiscal year to 30 June 2026. Coty says Prestige made up 66%12 of its total sales and decreased slightly on a reported basis. Revenue mixes how many bottles sold with what each one cost, so it cannot show a price rise on its own.
No source in this research tracks the shelf price of the same bottles over time. The supplier prices above are a single check in October 2026, not a series. What would answer the question is a dated basket of the same perfumes, priced in the same places each year.
The 10ML Price-per-ml Index is live and recomputed at least every hour. It shows today's prices, not a history, so it cannot say how much prices moved between 2025 and 2026 either.
How 10ML put these numbers together
Every figure on this page comes from a filing, a tax table, a market projection, a supplier price list or the live 10ML catalogue, each with its source and the date it was checked.
- Filings: Coty's 10-K for fiscal 2025 (segment note), Coty's fiscal 2026 results, and Interparfums' 2025 results and 10-K, read on the SEC's site. The Coty shares are 10ML analysis: each line divided by net revenues.
- Tax: standard VAT rates from the Tax Foundation table as of January 2026, which builds on the European Commission's Taxes in Europe Database. Each row was re-read in October 2026.
- Materials: small-pack retail prices for perfumers from Perfumer's Apprentice (synthetics) and Eden Botanicals (naturals), checked in October 2026. Prices per kilo or per ml are 10ML arithmetic, pack price divided by pack size; per ml assumes the listed volume, and densities differ.
- 10ML prices: the 10ML Price-per-ml Index, one row per perfume and decant size, the 10ML member price, VAT included, divided by the size. It covers the perfumes 10ML stocks, a curated list weighted to popular and recent launches with niche over-represented, not the whole market.
Left out on purpose: the share of the price that is the liquid, shop margins for perfume, and the popular claim that the liquid is a few per cent of the price, because no reputable source publishes them. Industrial contract prices for materials are not published either. Nothing here comes from 10ML's own costs or orders. 10ML stands on its own: no house or company named on this page is affiliated with it, and none endorses it.
More data in the same series sits in 10ML's perfume market and prices research.

Frequently asked questions
- How much does it cost to make a bottle of perfume?
- No filing gives a cost per bottle. The closest number is cost of sales: in Coty's prestige segment it was 29.4% of net revenues in the fiscal year to June 2025, covering the liquid, bottle, cap, box, production, freight and licence royalties, by 10ML analysis of Coty's 10-K. Shop margin and VAT come on top.
- What is the markup on perfume?
- No reputable source publishes a full markup from factory to shelf. Filings show the brand's side: Interparfums kept a gross margin of 63.6% in 2025, so cost of sales took a little over a third of its net sales. The shop's margin and VAT, up to 27% in Hungary, sit on top.
- How much of a perfume's price is the liquid itself?
- No reputable source publishes it. The often repeated claim that the liquid is a few per cent of the price appears on brand and shop pages, usually without a source. The filed ceiling is cost of sales, 29.4% of Coty Prestige net revenues in fiscal 2025, which also pays for bottle, cap, box, freight and licence royalties.
- Why is niche perfume dearer than designer perfume per ml?
- Across the perfumes 10ML stocks, the niche median is 48% higher per ml than the designer median at 30ml, at the 10ML member price, VAT included. The index measures the gap, not its cause: no filing in this research breaks out niche houses' costs, so no public number splits it into materials, advertising or margin.
- Why is oud so expensive?
- Agarwood oil costs far more than common aroma molecules: Eden Botanicals' price for Vietnamese agarwood works out to US$25.40/ml in 2026, by 10ML arithmetic, a small-pack price for perfumers, while Perfumer's Apprentice lists Iso E Super at US$95/kg. Finished perfumes dilute oud in alcohol, so its price does not map directly onto the price of a bottle.
- How much of the shelf price of perfume is VAT?
- Between about a seventh and a little over a fifth in the EU in 2026. VAT is charged on the pre-tax price, so at Luxembourg's 17% it is about a seventh of the shelf price, at Germany's 19% a little under a sixth, and at Hungary's 27% a little over a fifth, per the Tax Foundation.
- Why has perfume got more expensive in 2025 and 2026?
- The documented part is tax. Romania raised its standard VAT rate from 19% to 21% on 1 August 2025, and Estonia from 22% to 24% on 1 July 2025, per the Tax Foundation. No source in this data tracks shelf prices over time, so wider rises cannot be measured here. A dated basket of the same bottles would answer it.
- Where do these cost figures come from?
- From named sources: Coty's 10-K for fiscal 2025 and its fiscal 2026 results, Interparfums' 2025 results and 10-K, the Tax Foundation's VAT table built on the European Commission's database, Statista's market projection, supplier price lists from Perfumer's Apprentice and Eden Botanicals, and the live 10ML Price-per-ml Index, checked in October 2026.
