What does Narciso Rodriguez For Her smell like?

Narciso Rodriguez For Her by Narciso Rodriguez launched in 2003 as an Eau de Toilette in a black bottle, and that is the version 10ML decants. The first minutes bring African orange flower, osmanthus and bergamot: a soft floral brightness with a hint of fruit, not a sharp citrus blast. Then come musk and amber, in a musky, powdery accord with an animalic edge. The base is vetiver, patchouli and vanilla, so the musk settles on something earthy and lightly sweet rather than soapy. The catalogue lists it as a perfume for women.

That balance is what a clone has to hit: musk that feels like skin, with flowers on top and earth underneath.

Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum or Intense?

The name covers more than one perfume, and clone makers do not all aim at the same one. The 2003 Eau de Toilette is the orange flower, osmanthus and musk scent described above. The Eau de Parfum, in the pink bottle, is a different composition, and most dedicated clones are built against it. The Eau de Parfum Intense, credited to Sonia Constant, lists peach and bergamot, then musk and white flowers, then vanilla and vetiver. 1Best overall: Lovely

Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker leads because three sources, including a Parfumo comparison page, set it against the Eau de Toilette. On Parfumo's comparison page, most voting members find it similar to the For Her Eau de Toilette, the black-bottle version. Its published list runs lavender, apple, rosewood, bergamot and mandarin, then patchouli, narcissus and orchid, then musk, woods, cedarwood and white amber. Going by the two lists, it shares bergamot, patchouli, musk and an amber with For Her.

The main difference is the finish. A Fragrantica forum member who owns all three scents discussed in that thread finds Lovely nearer the Eau de Toilette, but airier and missing its creamy vanilla dry-down. Other members there say both are built on an Egyptian-musk accord yet are not interchangeable, with Lovely leaning on lavender and cedar.

It suits someone who likes the musk of For Her but wants it lighter and more herbal, with less sweetness at the end. Basis: named sources. When a member asked for a substitute for the Eau de Toilette in a separate forum thread, several members named Lovely, and one disagreed.

2Closest on the dry-down: Bright Rose

Bright Rose by Zara is the pick one owner of Lovely and both For Her versions calls very close. Its place here rests on that one owner's view, not on a documented dry-down comparison. On its Fragrantica page, that member finds it very close to For Her, especially the Eau de Toilette. Parfumo lists the For Her Eau de Parfum, the For Her Eau de Toilette and Lovely as similar, and members there call it a well-made For Her alternative. The sources we used give no note list for it, so the match rests on these wearers rather than on shared notes.

The main difference is rose. Another Fragrantica member finds it a bit less musky, with more rose coming through. A third sets it next to the pink-bottle Eau de Parfum instead, so which version it sits nearer is disputed.

It suits someone who wants the For Her musk softened by a rosier character, and who does not mind which version it lands closer to. Basis: named sources, the Fragrantica and Parfumo pages above.

3Lowest price: Look of Woman

Look of Woman by La Rive costs the least of the priced clones, per bottle and per ml alike, as the comparison table shows. Its Parfumo page lists peach and rose, then amber and musk, then patchouli and sandalwood. That is the published pyramid of the For Her Eau de Parfum, not the Eau de Toilette. Against the black-bottle version, the lists share amber, musk and patchouli.

The main difference is the target. This one is aimed at the pink bottle, so on paper it trades the orange flower and osmanthus opening for peach and rose, and the vetiver and vanilla base for sandalwood. Parfumo lists both For Her versions and Lovely as similar, and members there find it very similar to the Eau de Parfum; one finds it a bit quieter. On Parfumo's comparison page, most voting members find it similar to the Eau de Parfum.

It suits someone who knows and likes the pink-bottle Eau de Parfum and wants the smallest outlay. If the black bottle is the one you love, expect a different starting point. Basis: named sources, the two Parfumo pages.

4Softer take: Narissa For Her

Narissa For Her by Maison Alhambra is the pick with the widest split in opinion. Parfumo's community classifies it as smelling similar to the For Her Eau de Toilette. The note lists disagree with each other: Fragrantica gives pink pepper, peach and pear, then rose, tuberose and jasmine, then musk, cedar, sandalwood and vanilla, while a member there posts a list of orange blossom, osmanthus and musk. The Fragrantica list shares musk and vanilla with For Her; the member's list shares orange blossom, osmanthus and musk.

The main difference is volume. On that Fragrantica page, one member finds it very close to For Her but more muted, with less projection. Another finds it lighter and less harsh, closer in feel to Lovely. Others say it does not come close.

It suits someone who finds For Her a little sharp and wants a quieter take, and who accepts that owners do not agree on it. Basis: named sources, with a divided reception on Fragrantica.

5Fresher take: Cleopatra

Cleopatra by Tocca is compared mostly with the Eau de Toilette. Members on its Fragrantica page describe a similar musk character, though not the same, and several describe a musk with patchouli to the fore. The sources we used give no full note list, so the shared ground is the musk and the patchouli they name.

The main difference is brightness and earth. One Fragrantica member likens it to both the For Her Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum, with more green and citrus coming through. A forum member places it in the same Egyptian-musk family as For Her and Lovely, but slightly more citrus and patchouli forward. A Parfumo member calls it a close neighbour of For Her and Lovely, much more about musk and patchouli.

It suits someone who wants the musk with a greener, zestier lift and more earth underneath. Basis: named sources, from Fragrantica and Parfumo members.

6Darker take: Musky Rose

Musky Rose by Dossier is the only pick whose own house names the connection: Dossier's product page says it is inspired by Narciso Rodriguez For Her, without naming a version. The house lists osmanthus, bergamot and orange blossom, then rose, peach and jasmine, then musk, patchouli and oakmoss. Going by the lists, it shares the osmanthus, bergamot, orange blossom, musk and patchouli of the black-bottle version.

The main difference is the base. Fragrantica lists the same pyramid, which adds jasmine and oakmoss to the notes of For Her, and it gives earthy, patchouli and mossy among its accords. The darker label here rests on that oakmoss and patchouli base, not on strength: the house describes its intensity as soft.

It suits someone who likes the earthy end of For Her and would welcome a mossy, rosier turn. Basis: named sources, the house's own page and Fragrantica.

What every clone gets wrong

The first gap is the version. The black-bottle Eau de Toilette and the pink-bottle Eau de Parfum are different perfumes, and the clones scatter between them. Read what a clone is compared with before you read how close it is.

Bright Rose is disputed between the two, and Dossier names For Her for Musky Rose without saying which version.

The second gap is the flowers. Several of these lists put rose or peach where the Eau de Toilette has orange flower and osmanthus, which shifts the opening from soft and slightly fruity to rosier and rounder. The third is the finish: at least one owner misses the creamy vanilla at the end, and the earthy base changes from pick to pick.

Clone bottle or a 10ml decant of the original?

Counted per ml, the priced clones come in well under the original. Three picks carry no EU list price in the comparison table, because none was found on the check date. The original works out at €3.32/ml in the 10ml size (€33.21 in total) and at €2.64/ml in the 30ml (€79.20). Someone who already loves the scent and sprays it daily gets more volume per euro from a clone bottle.

Counted per decision, it looks different. For €11.61 you get the smallest size, a 3ml decant of around 60 sprays. After a week with it on your skin, you will know if the original deserves a bigger bottle, if a clone is enough, or if neither suits you. Authentic perfumes in the same family

If you like the powdery, musky mood but want another house, three originals share part of it. White Suede by Tom Ford, from 2009, puts rose and lily over suede and white musk, with sandalwood and amber below: softer, with a leathery touch. Lazy Sunday Morning by Maison Margiela, from 2013, opens on aldehydes, lily-of-the-valley and pear, with iris, orange blossom and rose, then ambrette, patchouli and white musk: fresh and clean. Fleur de Peau by Diptyque, from 2018, sets aldehydes, pink pepper, bergamot and angelica over iris and Turkish rose, on a base of musk, ambrette, ambergris and sandalwood: musky and powdery. How to test a dupe

A paper strip flatters the opening and hides the base, so compare on skin instead. Put For Her on for one whole day by itself, and keep the clone for the next. Keeping them apart stops one scent from skewing how you read the other. Check each at the same points: straight after spraying, once it has settled, and later in the day when the musk and the base are all that remain.

A 3ml decant of Narciso Rodriguez For Her is enough for a week of comparing.
